This weather will seperate the pros from the part timers
« on: January 06, 2010, 08:20:07 am »
Get out to work.
Buy some salt and clear some driveways. This is what running a business is like.
You have to think outside the box, its unbeleavble that many on this forum claim to be sitting at home watching TV or playing Xbox etc. when their is work to be done. Even if its spending the week phoning round getting more work.

We have the easiest climate to work in - the rest of northern europe has colder and deeper snow every year.
I am fed up with cannot cope Britain

Interesting title, however it will be the pros and not the part timers who will get hit the hardest. The part timers will have their benefits to fall back on or their 'proper' job to carry on with. They will be back down the firestation this afternoon whilst us professional windys will be struggling.

Why would that set the pro's apart from the 'part-timers' a very blanket statement with no real basis of truth and not very helpfull.

People use this forum for many reasons. But I suspect one of those is a sense of belonging and the ability to exchange information, tips, tricks etc with those who are in the same profession. Also I would imagine that for many this type of work is lonely and the sense of 'esprit de corp' that this forum brings is very welcome.

But the constant sniping and quick one liner put-downs are not very helpful and sets those who do it 'apart'.

I for one get alot from this forum but remember it is give and take....

Cheers
Dave.

Perhaps I should change the title
To "this weather will seperate the Winners from the moaning loosers"

firstly the northern countries in europe get this every year! we dont, and spending millions on contigency plans and machinery to cope with this amount of snow is a total waste of money for the UK government, as most of the machines will sit idley in depots for years at a time.
Secondly, I rate my health and safety and that of my customers before making a measly £50!!
Thirdly if you do go out cleaning and leave salt on the footpath, you are liable for any accidents that may happen on that footpath.
So with this in mind, if you crash your van on the snow and ice or one of your customer sues you because they tripped or fell on the patch that you gritted then don't come on here crying!!
For how long this is said to last for, I have enough funds to last!!
I will be out leafleting today and tomorrow, but I doubt I will get any phone calls until end of February or March time.

Well i know my customers well enough to realise that they wont appreciate me slashing water everywhere when it freezes easily and is peeing down with snow....professional or not (i dont claim benefits by the way ::)) i like MB think of my safety first.
It is frustrating for us not to be able to work so we certainly dont need clever dicks saying we are not professional...run your own business not others.

Yep the pro’s would have factored in bad weather, not to difficult at this time of year, it is Winter, and expect not to be able to work on those days.  ::)

but when those days turn into weeks its a different story. I'm losing money hand over fist at the minute. Its not a case of factoring the cost, how could you know what the cost would be? Its good to have back up funds but if you can't work and you turn over a little bit it soon mounts up to a high figure. All the other overheads don't stop because the weather is real bad.

The weather will get better and things will go back to normal. just grit your teeth and bare it. Its all you can do really.

I agree with a lot of what Matt has said. Far better to stay at home and wait till the weather improves.

Yes there are those that will say 'That's all well and good but I've got bills to pay'

Then perhaps a lesson has been learnt (albeit harshly) Try and have some funds available for next winter in case it happens again!

I haven't seen any Eastern European window cleaners round my way today. Maybe it's something to do with the weather.

Because you’re smart enough not to work in a snow blizzard, this alone is the main reason the foreigners are encourage to come to the UK.

Hope that explains it for you MB.   ;D

For a second there I thought Johnny was blaming ME (on my own) for the amount of eastern European workers coming over here.
