No he hasn't.

Travel to and from work is allowed.

Therefore work is allowed.

Were you listening to something else?
Did he not say essential work only?

If your work puts food on the table is it not essential?
No, it's not. Essential to you but not the country as a whole.

It’s been a very weird atmosphere working today so will be even more so from now on if we go out to work but it is essential for us to work to earn money to pay bills etc but then on the other hand we should be doing our bit to end this nightmare and help save lives  then we can get back to normal living again! What is everyone doing then work or not?

Did he not say essential work only?

No.  And if he did, he'd have to provide a list of what counts as 'essential work'.

This is what BoJo said; I'm a touch typist and typed it as he spoke:

These are the reasons you can leave your house:

Shopping.  For basics and kept to a minimum.

One form of exercise per day (run/walk cycle)  (though I don't think cycling is exercise.  It's cheating.  On a cheat machine.

Any medical need (for someone else counts)

And travel to and from work, but only when absolutely necessary, and cannot be done from home.

That's all.

That's it in a nutshell tosh......crack on....its gonna be nice weather too tomorrow
price higher/work harder!

Not clear enough for people working outdoors.

How was that not clear?

Sturgeon has been clearer.

No window cleaning in Scotland.
Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it - George Orwell

Boris hasn't put a ban on going to work it's now just a case of whether your customer wants you to work at their property and whether YOU want to work as well

Exactly

Speaking as a window cleaner then I think no to stopping us working.

But if I was to listen to  his speech as a non-window cleaner (most of society) then I think I'd take a different view.
The general idea seems to be ''stay home''.

Window cleaning is essential for my income  but it is not essential for any other reason.

So, as Au Ravelling  has said elsewhere here, I think the social stigma of carrying on cleaning windows will be too great.

Yes, I saw that. She did use the word essential. However, I think Boris was clear enough. In the context of trying to stop people going outside their home  "travel to and from work, but only when absolutely necessary" is pretty clear.

Good luck being seen cleaning windows over the next three weeks while businesses like clothes shops and electrical stores have been told to shut. Nevermind the general public only being allowed out to buy essentials, exercise once a day outside, not congregated in groups of more than two people and no visiting family and friends to stop house to house spreading.
We can play with the wording but we are the complete opposite of what is essential work such as blue light staff, road works, electricity workers etc.
I'd suspect a backlash if we were seen working during this three week period, I'll sit this one out.

If you go on the government twitter page. It says you may only leave home to go to work for key workers only.

He didn't say its only key workers who can work. So everyone can go to work if working from home isnt an option.   Therefore we can still work and esp those like me who do not require human contact ie for payment options

He can't cover every job and every task in so short a time.
He didn't say window cleaners couldn't work but he certainly didn't give the green light either.
I think the message was clear though. If you want to work because of something that he didn't say, you obviously didn't get the message.

I think you should stop and think Tosh for 15 minutes. People are listening to you telling them it's ok to go to work tomorrow when it really isn't. Cleaning mrs. Smiths windows in not 'absolutely necessary". Your a clever bloke and can twist and play with words but you are wrong if you think this doesn't apply to us.

If Boris only wants a list of specified people to go to work, he would've listed those occupations vital to the effort against covid-19.

But he hasn't because what he said was perfectly clear.

You can travel to and from work, if it's absolutely necessary and you cannot do it from home.

If you're a window cleaner you cannot clean windows from home, so it's absolutely necessary for you to travel to work.

Other countries, like Spain, have EXACTLY the same rules.

When I leave for work tomorrow I'll see a whole load of builders building a new housing estate.  Guaranteed.

''From this evening I must give the British people a very simple instruction, You must stay at home.''

The 'spirit' behind this, as opposed to the 'letter' makes me feel uncomfortable about cleaning windows for the next few weeks.

The spirit is that you shouldn't go out for fun and to socialise.
