Did he not say essential work only?

No.  And if he did, he'd have to provide a list of what counts as 'essential work'.

This is what BoJo said; I'm a touch typist and typed it as he spoke:

These are the reasons you can leave your house:

Shopping.  For basics and kept to a minimum.

One form of exercise per day (run/walk cycle)  (though I don't think cycling is exercise.  It's cheating.  On a cheat machine.

Any medical need (for someone else counts)

And travel to and from work, but only when absolutely necessary, and cannot be done from home.

That's all.

It’s been a very weird atmosphere working today so will be even more so from now on if we go out to work but it is essential for us to work to earn money to pay bills etc but then on the other hand we should be doing our bit to end this nightmare and help save lives  then we can get back to normal living again! What is everyone doing then work or not?

Speaking as a window cleaner then I think no to stopping us working.

But if I was to listen to  his speech as a non-window cleaner (most of society) then I think I'd take a different view.
The general idea seems to be ''stay home''.

Window cleaning is essential for my income  but it is not essential for any other reason.

So, as Au Ravelling  has said elsewhere here, I think the social stigma of carrying on cleaning windows will be too great.

Yes, I saw that. She did use the word essential. However, I think Boris was clear enough. In the context of trying to stop people going outside their home  "travel to and from work, but only when absolutely necessary" is pretty clear.

Good luck being seen cleaning windows over the next three weeks while businesses like clothes shops and electrical stores have been told to shut. Nevermind the general public only being allowed out to buy essentials, exercise once a day outside, not congregated in groups of more than two people and no visiting family and friends to stop house to house spreading.
We can play with the wording but we are the complete opposite of what is essential work such as blue light staff, road works, electricity workers etc.
I'd suspect a backlash if we were seen working during this three week period, I'll sit this one out.

He didn't say its only key workers who can work. So everyone can go to work if working from home isnt an option.   Therefore we can still work and esp those like me who do not require human contact ie for payment options

He can't cover every job and every task in so short a time.
He didn't say window cleaners couldn't work but he certainly didn't give the green light either.
I think the message was clear though. If you want to work because of something that he didn't say, you obviously didn't get the message.

If Boris only wants a list of specified people to go to work, he would've listed those occupations vital to the effort against covid-19.

But he hasn't because what he said was perfectly clear.

You can travel to and from work, if it's absolutely necessary and you cannot do it from home.

If you're a window cleaner you cannot clean windows from home, so it's absolutely necessary for you to travel to work.

Other countries, like Spain, have EXACTLY the same rules.

When I leave for work tomorrow I'll see a whole load of builders building a new housing estate.  Guaranteed.

You can travel to and from work, if it's absolutely necessary and you cannot do it from home.

If you're a window cleaner you cannot clean windows from home, so it's absolutely necessary for you to travel to work.
What you do is up to you, twist it how you like to allow yourself to go to work but it's irresponsible to tell others blatant bullpoop to support your poor decision.  It's obvious to almost everybody that the 'absolutely essential' referred to the work itself and not the travel aspect of the job.

I agree he should have been clearer but obviously he has a hard job and decisions to make and only a short amount of time in that speech. He should have said only key workers but from the twitter page it looks like we shouldn’t be leaving the house just to clean windows. If we do what he says we will be back at work with lots of dirty windows to clean and no threat of catching a deadly virus or passing it on. I’m behind with work as it is so going to be stressful don’t get me wrong, but no one was listening to the government so was forced into this

It's gonna cost me a few quid and maybe some customers too but I'm not going to be responsible for possibly infecting and killing anyone.

When he says 'this' is absolutely necessary , what 'this' is he referring to?  The work , or the travelling?

Actually.... the more I listen to it , he says only go to work where it’s absolutely necessary .... I think that means key workers 😞

I’m taking the next 2 weeks off and see how it goes

That's not what the pm said ref key workers. Ignore twitter that changes words used
He said 'absolutley essential', is your window cleaning absolutely essential?

He didn't though!

He said "absolutely necessary and can't be done from home"

He didn't mention key worker or essential which makes this all the more confusing.

"absolutely necessary" doesn't tell us anything as it's open to interpretation.

Did he mean absolutely necessary because it can't be done from home or did he mean it as in if its essential.

I'm stumped but I reckon he meant you can go to work if it can't be done from home otherwise he just stopped everyone working except key workers which I'm sure he would have said if that was the case.

He can't stop you working because there are no laws in place to do so. Yet.
There probably never will be. It's not easy passing new laws, especially ones like that.
He's asked you not to work- the message was clear- but there's not a lot he can do to stop you. We're not North Korea.
Come Thursday, he might be able to move you off the street or give you a slap on the wrist.

Did anyone really think it would be about window cleaning or the self employed?

On twitter there's lots of confusion. Beth Rigby (sky news) posted this which indicates that you can travel to work if you can't work from home: https://twitter.com/BethRigby/status/1242203319826857984

So when it's all said and done, the willy waving about cars and holidays doesn't amount to much if you're going to have to work through the biggest peacetime national crisis in a long time in a trade which typically relies on the older and subsequently more at risk members of society!

Our work is not absolutely necessary, so he's asking you not to go.
Or are you saying that he's asking us to go? That he's not bothered whether we go or not?

I couldn’t see anything on the official gov.uk site about it being only key workers who could work.Just that you can only travel to work if you absolutely can’t work from home.Unless I get a ten mile pole and hose that might be tricky.

That would worry me in this current situation. About 50% of mine are retired with a certain pension. I'm relying on them to be there when this is all over, lots of others will be loosing their jobs.

I think three weeks is just the start. Boris has read the Hobbit. The dwarves come to Bilbo’s house in twos and threes. All at once would be too much of a shock.
He is easing us into it. I think 12 weeks will be more like it.

I don’t think some people are reading into it enough,do you actually need it spelling out to you if your job is important enough and you need to travel to work that’s fine ie key worker.
It goes without saying that if you are going to be cleaning windows is that really classed as important, can people at the moment go without there windows being cleaned,I think they can.
What are people gonna clean shop windows 😂 there’s no shops open and even if they were open I don’t think having clean windows is gonna help much, you’ve just got to suck it up at the moment lol.

For some reason us window cleaners panic about everything.

Ask yourself if you were an employee working in say a factory or and office or any non keyworker role.

And you heard that speech, would you be going in to work tomorrow?

I can guarantee you would, because he never said you cant.

So why are we making this into something it's not.

The speech was poorly worded but it was still pretty obvious what was meant if you weren't looking for an excuse to shut shop.

I never said he was trying to stop us. I don't think he's in a position to. Yet. Discourage us, yes.
He's stopped a lot of others though, hasn't he?
He's going to step this up, I guarantee you that. He might not name window cleaners but there'll be further measures taken.

No, Boris isn't stopping anyone from WORKING.  He's trying to discourage people from TRAVELLING to work if they have other options.

And to stop people socialising.

You sound confused.

I'll give you his message in a very much shorter sentence.........    Stay at Home.

I see sports direct say they are not going to close, because people will need sports clothes to exercise. Let's see how long that last.

It'll be interesting.
Boris just made an appeal, tonight, before the new laws come in.
He can't just tell anyone whether they can work or not because of the coronavirus. Yet.

I've had email from Matalan, they're closing at 6pm tomorrow. So they're opening in the morning. Currys/ PcWorld say this:
Quote
We’re racing to put in express checkouts, kerbside collection and the contact-free, drive-thru shop this week, all of which will put even more safe distance between colleagues and customers. Where we need to limit customer access to the store to keep everyone safe, we will. And if we have to close stores for a time, we’ll do that too.

Right now our stores are open, but things are changing fast, and you can check before you go by visiting our online store finder.

Both emails came AFTER BoJo's announcement.

I think three weeks is just the start. Boris has read the Hobbit. The dwarves come to Bilbo’s house in twos and threes. All at once would be too much of a shock.
He is easing us into it. I think 12 weeks will be more like it.

Minimum. Expect this for 6 months.

Not yet, but I suspect there’s emergency legislation that could be rushed through the Lords and enshrined in law in an extremely short period of time. Say, end of the week.

The bit in red says a lot.
I can't believe people didn't pick up more from the announcement. I think there might be a lot of window cleaners changing fast in the next few days, as well.

He will give it a few days, let the initial hardship sink in and then, Friday I reckon, drop the massive bombshell. Police to have extraordinary powers etc. Nothing remotely like this situation has ever occurred in the UK before and will require incredible management.

A few shops being closed and woolly statements won’t “ do it” for very long. People just don’t listen. A North Korea approach will be used.

Happy days  ;D

We're going to need a lot more police officers, too.
It's going to be devastating, this, before it's done.

All leave has been cancelled, there has also been an appeal for special constables to come forward, if that doesn’t suffice I’m sure the army will have a roll to play.

Lol drama queen.

Keep calm and carry on.

We can work at present, so work!

Boris may decide that eventually workers who can’t work from home must shut down for a time, but it looks like they’ll pay self employed workers 80% of their usual earnings.

Employees are getting 80% of their usual earnings.

All banks are offering mortgage payment holidays. All tenants are being protected from eviction, even if they don’t pay their rent.

Supermarkets will continue to deliver food and groceries (of which there is no shortage)

This is where we reap the benefits of living in a rich, stable country.

I think you just need to chill.

Alternatively, you need to take your head out the sand and prepare for an extremely uncomfortable few years.

That will be the reality.

I have an email i send to custards the day before i'm due to work at their houses. Its a basic document allowing them to postpone/defer  if  they feel that is necessary in the current climate. I also point out that my activities need no personal contact with them.

The email is longer than the example above but that's the flavour of it

If necessary i can print it out and produce it to any jobsworth bureaucrat, should i be challenged by them

This is good for me but i realise you guys with big rounds this would be impossible.

This wasn’t a very clear speech and I’m sure lots of you will be going to work but let’s be clear we all need to do this together to stop this or it will last MUCH LONGER  and will effect our business even more and more people lose jobs who then can’t pay their window cleaner in the future. Lots of people dying, nhs staff working long hours and at critical condition not enough ventilators or beds so I’m sure we can all stay at home and wait for an update from Boris later or this week?  Most people surely has enough put by for times like this or even when they go on holiday costing thousands and the money lost while away so no different in that respect. I will be having time off and wait to hear more from Boris and rishi

Morning everyone, as it stands I believe there is no right or wrong when it comes to deciding whether or not to work.
Has the pm's speech banned us from working, probably not HOWEVER
The main message is STAY AT HOME!!
If your financial position leaves you with no choice then, until the government put something in place, keep working
Personally I will treat the next couple of weeks as my annual holiday  ( not like we will be able to go anywhere this year anyway).
STAY SAFE,  STAY AT HOME

''There's no law that they can stop anyone working yet but I think they're pretty clear. The more people that stay at home, the less people will die.''

I heard if you can't by any means work from home and its essential that you go out, then carry on.  It's essential that we work outside because you can't clean from home, that's what he's saying.

I had a job to check today but I won't be going because it's not essential. But the guys are out working today because they can't do it from home.

Social distancing needs to be applied, but when your off work you stay home, simples.

It will prob all change by the end of the week, so make the most of it.

I do have a photo of BBC news explaining it but I can't seem to upload it.

But he asked government to clarify.
Boris can't shut us down. He can't force us to socially distance, And he can't force us to wash our hands.

This thread started less than three days ago ... Imagine what the next three weeks are gonna be about!

Them 'good old boys in the woods' must be loving this.

Guns, lots of guns and then more guns. Squeal piggy -squeal!!

On the plus side I'm just an unemployed window cleaner hiding out in the woods  ;D
