You'd be mad to use trad. unless you really have to. Due to the cold I have tradded a bit last week and it was painfully slow compared to wfp.

On Monday, because heavy snow was forecast I wfp'd tops and tradded downstairs and struggled to make £75 in 4 hours - it was awful.

Today, because I know the forecast is for a thaw, I used wfp starting at 12 noon (with a bit of screenwash in the mix) and just put a bit of salt/grit down on a public footpath and splashed a bit of 5:1 screenwash mix from a squeezy bottle on the floor outside the custies doors.

In 4 hours, even with low water flow and  rubbing snow/ice off of the hoses and gritting I managed £133.

Tomorrow I plan a full day wfp, but we shall see.

You don't know how to price trad than malc ;) You've cut yourself short by pricing too cheap wfp?

I don't do trad except in extremis macmac - and you can see the difference in the earnings over 4 hrs on similar properties - £75 vs £133. When I was trad in normal non icy conditions I would do about £20/25 ph on these properties - the same stuff wfp in non icy conditions now earns me £40 ph.

No brainer really ... it's like changing from driving steam engines to driving diesels - the tradition isn't there but it's a lot less labour intensive and quicker.
You must be very quick with wfp.
I'd worry about leaving it done properly if I went too fast. You have to do it properly, you can't get away with a mistake like with trad.

Trad I was doing about £20-23 p/h
Wfp I'm more like £25-30 p/h

Just miss out the main entrances. You could even scatter a little bit of rocksalt if you needed to. Wouldn't be that difficult.

at the moment with the sheer amount of posts about freezing hoses/tanks/pumps and all the faffing about and expense im glad im not!

when i do eventually get a van and  a set up i think ill just use it say march-october then revert to trad for the cold winter months!

what do u think guys?do u sometimes think things were simpler and easier before WFP?

REGARDS
all my m8s had the same problem this winter, water freezing on the glass, they are trad to, it is best to have both as an option,

Theres been loads of posts on here mate about sweeping the water away and applying salt to prevent freezing, its real easy.

Oh play the game, spend loads on wfp and then not use it all year round or above doorways or spend time scattering salt. Wfp sounds great and so much faster

Scattering a bit of salt (if needed) is only as much of a pain as having to wipe ledges. I have not had to do it yet. I have just been avoiding the main entrances. I think the customer is already wary of slipping in this weather.

I'm not saying I do £40 ph all day long wfp anymore than I did £25 all day long on trad.

I was pointing out that on Monday when I went back to trad for the 4 hrs I worked I did £75; yet on the same estate today when able to work wfp I did £133 in the same length of time. These were both in "slow" conditions due to the weather,; it was a direct comparison for me.

This thread started with "Glad I'm not wfp" and a proposal to work spring/summer wfp and go trad in winter. My experience suggests this would be a most unwise move - and that's on speed alone, let alone other ameliorating factors.

With the right precautions (van kept warm overnight) I believe a "cold" wfp operator can work in zero degrees as long as he is prepared to salt or screenwash floors by entranceways. And if you blade the doors you can work in minus 1 or 2.
It's a game of three halves!

Tim. You obviously know what you can earn WFP, safely, and with far less difficulty than WFP.

Contempt prior to investigation. He's his own worse enemy Tim.

Honestly, yes i do, but then i remember all the pros and cons and realize that at the end of it all wfp has a lot more pros

Plus, we tend to forget all the bad things when we are being nostalgic. Although trad is a simpler method, it isn't always easy peasy.
