Well done mate, A similar thing happened to me a few years back, A similar amount of money too.
In my case the wallet had a photo membership card for a caravan club. The guy was of Arabic appearance, I still remember his name, Sawiki. I sat in the car counting out the money. It was just before Christmas, and I have to be honest I was tempted. At the end of the day I knew the money wasn't mine so went to the police station with it. An hour later this guy posted a thank you note through my door with a £20 note.
It's the same when a customer tells you that they are going away for 3 months, but still want you to do the windows, you just have to do what's right.
That hug from the old dear will be your best Christmas present for years to come mate, you lost nothing, it wasn't yours, but you gained one hell of a lot. What you were able to do for her, neither of you will ever forget. Dai

Well done Elginn Sparrowhawk. It's a pity some folk here don't take this attitude when ripping people off with silly charges. As someone said "what goes around comes around". Season's greetings.

calm down feen
we all charge what we think is fair and what the customer is prepared to pay.
they can always say no, and it is easier to reduce a charge than it is to put it up.
merry christmas to you too

If you give a price and the customer says go ahead and do it,you are not ripping them off at all. When you quote it`s a gamble whether you get the job or not,the higher the price the bigger the gamble any fool can work for nothing.

Tony, Have you read some of the posts on here? £50/60 for 40 mins gutter clean ??? Now read the original post of the thread you replied to :)
NWH, We all know that. But we all (should) know that there is also a perception of value. If we do the job very quickly the customer will expect it to be cheaper. I think we should all be a bit more honest. Tell them that you work at £x per hour. You think the job will be 1 hour or whatever. If it's less, charge less etc

Complete rubbish,if i give a price it is for what i want for doing the job end of story. That`s why i never get involved with how much do you charge per hour mr WC,if i was to charge per hour i would be doing myself out of cash big time,i can clean loads and loads of window`s or gutters or weather boarding in an hour if i was to charge say £20 an hour i might aswell give up because at the moment some of my jobs take me an hour and i can get £70 upwards per job.At the end of the day i`m in business,my TAX bill has just shown me that so i`ve got it in writing, people will only pay what there prepared to pay and if there not willing to pay my price i shout next and move on.Merry christmas.

Well NWH enjoy your Christmas. Cleanandshine, you,ve missed the point. When quoted £50/60 custie probably thought it was a big job. When done in 40 minutes, custie thinks " that's quick. Not worth the money". I'm not suggesting the custie shouldn't pay, I'm suggesting the pricing should be more honest. Hence, my reference to the original post. Please read it, it's to do with honesty.

I don`t care what anyone thinks,i`m not dragging any job out or pricing it to low just because someone is not sensible enough to see that i`ve invested in my business with van and equipment to get the job done quicker and better.I don`t moan at the local quick fit fitter because he fitted my tyres in 10mins,even though it only took him 10mins it still cost me £160,i could have got some bloke who didn`t know what he was doing it might have taken him allday.Happy christmas.
