Fed up
« on: August 13, 2006, 01:11:22 pm »
Why do people take the micky out of window cleaners?Sometimes i am almost embarrassed to tell people what i do for a living.Normally i dont care what people think, but just lately ive had a few snide remarks off people and even family.Am i being viewed as the lowest of the low?I try and be as courtious and professional as i can,but peoples misconceptions remain. This is the only thing about this job that bothers me,and at times hurts my pride.I dont mean to sound negative,im just getting p*ssed off lately.this is not a put down to window cleaners.

That's the way it is I'm afraid mate.

It's always been a working class profession and it always will be.
No amount of flash equipment or posh vans will change that fact.
One of the reasons I'm not going to do so.
It's just trying to make it something it's not.

If you want respect, become a teacher, doctor or scientist or something.
Dirty hands jobs never look as good as clean hands jobs. :-\

I think we all get it from time to time.People who usually have to dress smart for work eg people who work in banks, hotel receptions, shops etc.. tend to be the ones who look down their nose at you.

I find it quite amusing, as I am quite reassured that I am earning 3 times what they are - and without the stress! At a school reunion , I had a load of crap of some idiot - until I told him what I earned  ;D

Chin up, these people who try to belittle you, are only lacking in self esteem themselves  :(

Kind regards

Jon

Confidence problem? ;D
Ok ::)

You obviously believe it's a glamourous job.
I however am firmly on planet earth.
I'm under no illusions that it doesn't sound good, and I have no intentions of doing it for many more years.

Because I've got the confidence to start something else.

This used to bother me at one time as well.  These days, most of the time I couldn't give a toss.  If I feel happy within myself, other peoples' negative opinions of me don't touch me.  If I'm stressed out and/or feeling a bit low, it can affect me.  If you feel bad about what you do, you can always take the p out of the dustbinmen I guess  ;D  (just joking.  They perform a valuable service too).
Have you ever noticed where in a social situation when you are meeting new people the question about what you do for a living crops up pretty early?  I bet the dustmen and window cleaners aren't the ones asking that question  :)  .  Some people need to ask these questions so that they can make up some hierarchy in their heads based on spurious values.  I once had a laugh at a party many years ago.  I pretended I was a surgeon.  I carried it off brilliantly and at the end of the night, I confessed.  They all had a great laugh with me and enjoyed the joke.
