To justify a 2nd van...
« on: February 16, 2012, 04:49:33 pm »
As some of you are aware, im in 2 minds as to whether to get a second van on the go, and employ another person.

I have found a 2nd lad that im happy with taking on, someone that I know can window clean, and who i know i can trust.

My idea is to have my current employee and the new one in one van and myself in the other, untill I then build up enough to warrent a 3rd employee.

The only thing im a bit worried about is that the van their in, will only be making the same amount of money as what their wages are for that day. So, after you take into consideration insurances, van repairs etc... is it really worth it?

(I am currently increasing my prices before anyone suggests that)

If you had LOADS of commercial building/ blocks of flats etc then yes the profit will be more so you will make more money.

Im only residential so cant make as much money as 'the bigger firms'

i dont think they do make money, there are a lot of companies up in the north, and all the turf wars are, who has the most vans, not who is making the money, with vat, 40 tax, nat insurance, employees liability insurance and it just keeps going on and on, we had 18 window cleaners working for us, and would agree, more money was made with my dad and 1 employer. who still works for us today, started at 14, and hes 71 now
Some of the stupidly low prices big firms are charging, they wont even cover costs
, you can earn more money on domestics imo

There is a few large firms in London that make very little if any profit, same old story they do not charge enough to cover the overheads.

your right its not worth it. you need to make some major changes to your business before it is worth it. one of my 2 man vans did £640.00 today (£550 is an average day) and they each got paid £90.00

being busy and making money are not the same thing.

£50 a day per person. So the van will make £200 - £250 a day

Surely you will pay the driver a bit extra given the extra responsibility he will have?

Hi Lee,
550 is an average day for two men? I know you price well but would love to know how you achieve those figures? Whats the average job value and how many houses do you expect them to clean a day. Dont want you to divulge your secrets but would be really interesting to know....

I don't know much about commercial work, but if the majority of their work was on a 12 weekly rota I can see how that could be achieved between 9 and 5, well planned and working hard.

I reckon your 2 man van should doing about £400 a day mate unless your prices are a bit low?
When I worked for a local guy, his work was a little underpriced but I was still averaging over  £200 a day on me Todd!  :)
There's no way I'd consider taking on two guys If they could only earn that between them chap

He most probably charge £25-£30 per house, then two men only have to do 20-25 house and they reached the target. Don’t forget Lee lives in south and these kind of charges are normal in south, specially near London or Gatwick.
