« on: November 23, 2010, 10:15:06 pm »
on  my scudo, im guessing its the bearings? is this a diy job or a garage? just sailed thru the mot too, gutted. is it ok to leave it until the noise becomes unbearable?

when is it squeaking, braking, cornering, over speed bumps or what? you will need to find out what is wrong first.

If you have the tools then a wheel bearing is only a 45 minute job, it could also be a loose brake shoe due to a worn brake shoe spring, also a 45 minute job. If you don't have the tools then the whole thing is a real labour and better given to someone who has the tools. Nothing too technical involved just common sense and a realization that your hands will get dirty.

wheel bearings are not squeeking noises, they are a rumbling noise, due to failed bearings, squeeks could be low brakes pads or shoes or simply dust on them

yeah I would have to agree with that, sounds more like brakes to me or brake dust,

Lads, telling you. If one small ball bearing compresses due to wear on top or below for that matter upon another, it will squeel like a pig, been there done it all with a guy who taught me well.

yes you could be right, thats why I asked if when braking or not, and to check for bearing just jack up and check for play on the wheel

My front bearings are bad,

they whir ! ....they make deep , droning humming noise, sometimes on the motorway i can hardly hear the radio!

Mechanic said the sound will get louder and deeper, ..pretty much unbearable.

needless to say the vans going in for a minor op.

 ;)

it seems to happen at high speed, ive tried pulling on the handbrake (not hard) to see if that changes the sound but it doesnt, so thats why i thought it was the bearing,

i did take the wheel off and its a drum brake wheel, with a metal cap, i think that is prised off and a big nut there? there is a nipple which fits into a hole in the wheel, not sure if that needs removing too?

looked on ebay and a new bearing is about £70

what tools do i need?

dont mean to offend mate but if you aint sure dont do it yourself, if a wheel bearing is fitted incorrectly then i wouldnt want to drive the van. just take it to a garage it wont cost as much as it would if you fitted it wrong and crashed

First things first,

To check if it is the bearing jack the wheel up put one hand on the top one on the bottom and "waggle" is there any movement if there is its the bearing.

To change the bearing I recommend a haynes manual

Yeh i agree , dont attempt it... and i hear they are murder to get off,(front)....

a kit is £45 at most decent places, ... plus labour

get it in the garage.

you sure about 'waggling' it? the bearing will make a low rumbling sound when turned. there may be movement but it will be very slight unless its totally shot and if thats the case then he would definatly know something was up and not drive it.

also to change it id recommend a few spanners  ;D

agreed with that

it isn't a hard job but better to follow instructions. and just read the last post you will definitely get some play or waggle as described above

If the bearing is squeaking id guess there would be movement.

the thing is im guessing its a £200 in a garage or £100 for me maybe more if i need extra tools, at least then ive learned and can do it again in the future.

i might ask my neighbour if she wants a hobble, i saw her fettling her brake pads the other day!

i can watch her then and learn!
