First things first,

To check if it is the bearing jack the wheel up put one hand on the top one on the bottom and "waggle" is there any movement if there is its the bearing.

Form B, I agree this is one way to check if the bearing is worn, however, if the top or bottom (if there is one) wishbone ball joint is worn, then the wheel unit will also shake/wabble and it is then a case of stripping the unit down to eliminate the probable parts, to the point of identity.
The guy seems not too familiar with these kinds of problems and I would advise him to take it to an experienced mechanic though, as stated before, safety is paramount mate and if you are not sure then don't go there. It should not cost too much for what will be an hours work plus parts.

If the bearing is squeaking id guess there would be movement.

i did have the wheel off to have a nose, i spun it and there was no noise, didnt think of waggling it! doh!

Then check the other one as well

Then do the same with the front wheels as noises have a horrible way of travelling, so it could be a front disc pad or perhaps one of the front protector plates rubbing against the brake disc -  ;D ;D ;D

jacked it up again today, no waggle in the wheel, but a ruff feeling twice on each revolution? hard to say if its brake shoes or bearings? will have to open it up

If the wheel feels rough when you turn it - then its probably the bearing.

Take it to the garage and let the pros deal with it!!! As if it is the wheel bearing and you don't know what you are doing you could A) Over tighten it B) Under tighten it C) Damage the brake shoes trying to get the drum off D) Damage the shoe fitting kit trying to get the drum off E)Not adjust the brakes back up properly!!!

After 15 years as a mechanic even i now send my van and car to my mates garage as not only do i not have the time but also they have all the equipment in a nice WARM workshop ;)

Good Luck
Alan :)

It could easily be  a rear suspension  bush or mounting, do these scudo`s have rear trailing arms, you hear it at high speed, could just be movement, slight up and down causing it ,dont even think of changing the bearing yourself, plenty of diy`ers and mechanics knack the new bearing putting it in and plenty put it in the wrong way round and taking them out again knacks them.
