Go to B&Q- wonderful window cleaning suppliers and but a piece of Bungee elastic, not too thick a diameter. Use approx 12-14" and make/tie a loop around the cross bar and adjust as appropriate, put your pole on the transvers bars and then just hook the loop over the ends of the cross bars- simples. Try it.
I use the similar stronger bungee elastic loops to hold my ladders.

doesnt sound too safe to me jeff!!i would never use bungees for ladders!clamps for me!i use to just tie them on with rope years ago and sometimes they would fly across the roof on a windy day!!!
im thinking a proper tube that i can lock my poles in overnight as well!!

Whilst I agree with the "doesnt sound safe comment". In practice it works as long as you have a stopper on the end of the cross bars they cannot slide off. Been using the idea for 15 years now. I mean they use bungee for jumping off buildings.
I have a few time forgotten to take the 2 seconds it takes to hook them on and driven off :

i`ve clamped 2 lenghths of waste pipe to my ladder rack and capped off the front, just slide my poles in and they stay in place. its cheaper than the proper roof tubes

weve got the same van does yours have the bars behind the driver seat? if so you can put your poles won top of it with the brushe end going towards the rear doors and the other end leaning against the roof bit above the drivers seat if that makes any sense then just bungee them tight against the side ive got a pic here will upload a better pic 2moro
