A Step in to the unknownish...
« on: February 18, 2010, 12:23:19 pm »
I've been asked to quote on cleaning two blocks of flats on a new development. Four floors (ground + 3), although the back of the site slopes away so realistically it will be 5 floors on one side of them. There are a number of "Juliet" balconies and proper balconies on the buildings. We've been told by the management company that we need to clean just the balcony glass/plastic and not the doors behind them. We also have to clean the inside of the communal stairwells, which, of course, have been designed without any thought as to how they'll be cleaned...

So I have a couple of questions:

We'll need a 50'+ brush for the top floor. It will be used for 2 hours every 2 months so I'm reluctant to flash out the best part of £1000 on one, but if it means getting this contract I guess I'll have to. What would you recommend? And where would you get it from? Or does anyone in the Cheltenham/Gloucester area have one they would rent to me?

To clean the stairwell glass will be a real faff, I think we'll need to use one of the Vikan internal glazing kits with an extension pole, as there is access on each floor. They can't be cleaned from the ground as the sills are to big... Does anyone have any experience of using one of these things? I'm not expecting to be able to do a brilliant job on these windows, but hey I didn't design them to be uncleanable so take it up with the architects!

Thoughts please, gentlefolks!

I would say a Super Lite would do you good seeing as you will use it for 2 hours. You need something light.

Downside to that is the setup time, and you need some space to erect it.

You can do it cheaper using the fishing pole route though, seeing as you don't use it regularly it would be a good idea. Some guys on here will probably advice on which pole etc.

Only about a 250 mile round trip to pick it up, and 250 miles to drop it back...  :P

Hi Ken,

Having the same problems at the minute. Trying to source a relatively cheap 45' pole for use every 3 months on about 12 windows.

I went to Ionics today to see what their 45' multipole was like. Because it's 8ft sections it's a nightmare to try and erect on your own and it's very heavy. Fairly cheap though at £327 + vat = £384.22.

I definately want an extendable pole though so now looking at their 45' Mark #1 Ergolite pole because it's in 6ft sections so should be easier to erect.  It's just come down in price but is still a bit steep for my liking. £597.95 +vat = £702.59.

Hope this is of some use.

I'm based in Worcester if that helps at all.
