From what i read from your previous anti-WFP posts from years ago,you used to be a v.good and quick trad man.Why not park you car on gritted roads and walk up side streets with a bucket ansd squeege etc and just trad downstairs, you will get money coming in,and be pretty safe also

All I can say is:

MAKE UP YOUR OWN MINDS

Throughout my long career I rarely let weather stop me.   I lost two weeks in the winter of 86/87 when I lived on the Isle of Sheppey and we had drifts up to 12 feet deep.

When the snow started to melt, we still had some weeks with ice on the ground but I managed to work.  I even put plastic bags on my feet inside my boots to keep them warm and dry.

I was all trad then, of course, but with a bit of care and common sense I managed to keep on top of my work and keep the money coming in.

You need to think more carefully before tackling a job, like wedging the ladder into places where it can't slip, etc but it's perfectly feasible if you know what you're doing and don't take unnecessary risks.

WFP is a different matter - I'm not sure I would want to be splashing all that water about especially near public paths etc.

Very true, we can't get out of our cul de sac, let alone get to the main roads, but across town where it is flat ground you can! Everywhere is different and we have all been affected differently

There has to be some point when you give up ;D

Bet they were nice at the end of the day ;D

I could get to my work today, but even trad the water froze on the glass. I know of some wc who put anti freeze in their water but it honks and leaves a bit of a smeary mess. I can get to my work ok, but I can't do it when I get there. Any suggestions? (I know someone will suggest IPA, but I haven't got any and won't be able to get some by tomorrow...) Mr Muscle and a dry scrim?

Roger - ask the taxman if you can pay in instalments. They are quite amenable if you give them some notice.

If you are really short of cash then take a shovel and some grit in a bag and offer to clear some paths or drives within walking distance of your house at £10 a pop.

If you get a handful of yesses that's £50 in your pocket.
It's a game of three halves!

Roger if you can't work mate, well what can one do? You have another talent photography. When will you get another opportunity like this of getting some stunning winter shots?
Get up in the morning before daybreak and get out there with your camera. Get some shots of the sun coming up over the snow, if I had your eye for a shot, and the skills that you have I would be out there doing it.
You may be able to posterize some and sell them. The local sledging field should yield a few good shots too. Time to get positive mate, you won't have a chance like this again for a long time. Well I hope not.

Im in the same boat only i have or should say HAD some money behind me but its getting close to the time where i need to work , gonna go out tommorow and give it a go, still 8inches of snow down here from tuesday but no more forecasted however the temp was -10 at 9 am and still only -3 now

plus with windchill is alot lower but i need to give it a go just so i dont feel guilty about not working once ive tried and failed or succeeded i will be happier either way

Got some shops nearby to trad, and a days work trad that im gonna plod on and do what i can tommorow and maybe saturday if all goes well

If you are struggling for money and can get your car safely to a main road where its been gritted etc, you should be ok?

went out at one today just got back only did just over £60
this afternoon slow and hard work but its money in my pocket.

roads arent brilliant but only avoided one job because rd
was impassable.my thermometer told -4 this morning,soon
as sun is up high in the sky temperature changes rapidly, totally
okay to work in. just trundled around slowly all day making sure i was way below
the speed limit.most people back at work so if i had it any problems
down side streets would of had plenty of road to play with.

hopefully if your customers are as lazy as mine squeaky they wouldnt
have cleared their paths of snow and any water gets absorbed quite
quickly.

if its 0c or above tomorrow around dinner time will be out again

I can't be bothered to read the entire thread, too much unrelated dross on here lately.

Get out and do SOMETHING Roger, You will go mad otherwise, cold all next week!!
I relented today and carried on my round with the customers which were due on 14th Dec. That's how far behind I am. However, I just did the bottoms trad. Customers were fine. They didn't want WFP water everywhere anyway and would have cancelled had I phoned to ask.

I pay my tax by S.O. and it's payed for which is just as well as I have lost about £1500 due to xmas and the weather!!

PS Get some isopropyl as well, even for trad it will really help.

funny enough i was thinking that yesterday, i was trying to get a good photo ( i did in the end ) of my 6 yr old hitting a ramp in the snow ( getting air )

i thought i could be raking it in if i had a good camera that could take pic after pic in seconds ( my old camera could ), i could have handed out my e.mail address and put a pic of each person online, they could have chosen the child and then e.mailed them all the pics i took of that child

i then thought, would a parent get funny is some guy was taking pics again and again of the child, i guess they would, i know i would

As I'm so behind I was able to move a bunch of bungalows forward a couple of weeks and they still weren't early!

Popped out earlier and did about £50 trad.
Not a wage, but more than I had this morning, it all helps.

Funnily enough the ones I usually wfp seemed to get done quicker by hand anyway. Learned something there...

My girlfriends mother slipped on ice yesterday and ended up down the hospital.

Even if you can work wfp afternoons when the icy roads are safer to drive on do you really think customers will appreciate you turning their outside area into a skating rink for them to fall on.

Is it worth the risk of being sued by customers or skidding on the ice and pranging your van.

Stay positive, accept window cleaning work is not really practical at times in these weather conditions at the moment and do something positive like catching up with bookwork, canvassing, DIY at home or putting your feet up and mellowing out so you don't end up feeling low, and end up suffering with depression. We are all in the same boat, unable to work and not earning our income. Chin up and remain positive. :)

I would go out, if it looks like a road is to slippery then leave the odd customer.  Unless you leave the hoses in the snow for ages unused they won't freeze if the air temperature is above zero.  I went out yesterday and all my customers were pleased to see me.  I do have 4 wheel drive so it helps to a point.  You have to be sensible about it and not take risks but at the same time you still need to earn a living.

When clean your round how ever many weeks late in 4 weeks time I bet most would have forgotten about the snow and ask where you've been.

Simon.

worked trad 2 day all ground floor mind old peoples homes. 8ins snow 2 18 ins drifts . not worth risk unless bottom only . as 4 working wfp is it worth the possible liable claims 4 someone slipping on ice caused by u. trad wins this time :)
