Yes. privileges that free members wouldn't get.Get rid of my embarrasing post count for a start, and be able to have a sensible chat sometimes .

this would be a start, also a few other things could be done, this would make ciu money and also make it a better info portal with facts

the " enhanced members " thing works in 2 ways , it creates a little money ( so yes thats the idea ), the members who feel they owe the forum something will pay a few quid, it also creates a "them and us" feeling, the payers think they are better than the non-payers, the non-payers realize this and play up to it thus creating a atmosphere

a portal is hardly going to rake in the money though, sell a few ad's etc etc

not being argumentative, just what i think

Matt, I feel your judging on what you have done and not what can be done, there is a bigger picture out there and things can and will work and make money, I honestly think your mind is very closed to making money (i'm not attacking you by the way, just saying what I think
.

ian

i have done it with various message boards, i have tried the "enhanced" membership idea, they used to get access to a members only area, bigger PM box, they could use a section of a server for uploads, it worked for a while, then the problems of them and us set in

i tried it on another board, same benefits with use of a arcade, free listings on a "advertisers area" ( a small auction script ), it also worked for a while

i have sold banners and adverts to suppliers

i honestly know how bigger forums tick, i al not saying i have all the answers or i am a expert, but i have run forums that have been bigger than CIU

More could be done with the clean it up brand. What an easy place to look for clean it up training courses, or to buy clean it up identity badges, or clean it up work clothes.

thats the point, its not a brand to many, its a forum where people hang out and chat

yes i guess CIU could team up with a training company and sell training, training for what ? ?? ? H&S i guess, as window cleaning is sorted with Ironics and the NVQ guy who posts on here

ID badges ? ? ?

work cloths, price is king with that, people will go with the cheapest, not pay a extra 3 quid per T-shirt because it has a CIU badge on it

it appears i am just being negative here, i am not trying to be, i am just trying to be objective

i have asked ian for his ideas  ( as i think you asked him for them as well slumpy )

i would love to know how this place will earn that much money

Oh, and if we were paying be able to have a proper moan at the mods instead of praising them up all the time.

Have a proper moan anytime, i don't mind.

I have thick skin, go ahead.

After all, that advertising space has been available for ages now, and nobody has bothered to take it up.  Eventually they had to put google ads on there, which says it all really.

I enquired about advertising in that slot and didn't get a reply. At the time I'm sure I'd have been prepared to pay more than the revenue Google ads generate.

A reasonable one-off fee to join for everyone would resolve the issue of a divide but the 'personality' of the site would completely change so it would be a risk.

It could easily go pear shaped because there are loads of cleaning forums out there already.  Cleanitup attracts members because of the fast replies and that is thanks to the amount of members.
Paying would mean less members and slower replies and so less attraction.

There would need to be an incentive of sufficient value to justify the fee in the minds of potential members.

As Nat says the WCR forum (based in America and nothing to do with me by the way - they just pinched my name!)  they have the right idea. Their site is imaginitive and cutting edge.
It's their use of video and podcasting that makes it unique and they tie that in with selling a wide range of products.

Whoever takes on the job would do well to learn from them.

That said, I don't think this site will make anyone rich. Especially as its shared profits and as said members come here to socialise not to buy.

To whoever takes on the job I reckon your best bet would be to build on the fun side of the site as if it were a virtual pub where friends hang out.

eg. you could pay £5 credits to buy 20 pints or something which you can then send to friends in public view. Games rooms and stuff like that.

could we also buy a virtual pool cue to wrap around ewans head in a virtual bar room brawl ? ? ? ?

now that would be a earner  ;D ;D
