What would you do to bring in the big money Ian?

He's unlikely to recruit from one of us, and the best business model would be the fed. Everything they shoud have done ten years ago they are now doing, which is to find ways of adding as much value as possible to being a member while soaking individual members for as much as they will stand.

I was quite excited about the guild, but they were beaten to the punch on most things.Mike gets the ideas but uses poor strategy to implement them, he got lucky with this forum, in that it is a fabulous success with the users providing the content etc, but that's all it was luck. The brainy bit is to turn that into a sustainable cash cow.

yes, i am interested in that aswell

a directory ? ? ?  its been done and didnt work, even if it was a success, it would just spawn copies that will sell the "rights" cheaper

slumpy said selling off our details to companies, not going to make many friends that, and we dont really have to list details, a company could get a office admin to look at posts and find details

the nature of most window cleaners is that they want the money they earn to stay in the pocket, they will not pay for a directory, subs, private members area, gold membership etc etc

i look forward to your idea's as it will be interesting

i have done steering of forums, from the backend programming to the idea's to bring in money to pay for the hosting, i had a forum that ran on its own dedicated box, yes its own server ( based in the USA ), not shared with 200 - 300 other sites, the bandwidth was massive

dont judge my online achievements on the DIY forum, because i can assure you its not, in certain online circles i was and am still well thought of

slumpy, he didnt get lucky with the forum, he got lucky with the members, the forum would be nothing without the members

people come on here for a bit of advice, a bit of a laugh and a bit of naughtiness

its the members that make it, they made it many years ago

a new admin might come in and be a little uptight and think the "banter" posts are not wanted, people will move on and find somewhere else

i started a forum " the cleaning forums" a top notch message board ( chat room, full arcade it even had a auction attached to it , though the auction was never launched to the public ) , it had sections for the UK and USA, with the idea to bring over the Americans and share the idea's ( the americans use e.mail lists more than forums, i got to know the admin on the e.mail list and we aggree'd to try the idea of the board ), it took of then a couple of idiots from another board who had just started decided to spoil it with porn links again and again, it was at a time when i started the DIY forum and was taking alot of abuse because of it )
so the idea was binned by myself, it just wasnt worth the hastle, i thought i would stick around and stay on CIU

I remeber your diy site spammed also matt, you do get some very sad people about, I would have tracked them and had a bit of fun personally.

By the way I think your diy forum is V good, I do think I have said that to you before, and if I remember correctly I even tried to help you not get in trouble over something that was missing.

Of course everything you say makes sence because you know what you are talking about, i don't and was just casting about.Even bigger things, like friends reunited while having a high value produce little income and are soon outmoded, and i suppose there are not any great models to copy.

I never did judge you on the diy forum, it was ultruistic and therfore not my area.I did think that the people you were trying to help were not a nice bunch and the very least likely group to contribute to hosting or to put anything back.Using the same analytics you used on mike's forum your targets were a miserable tight bunch obsessed with not spending any money while taking part in what amounted to a once in a lifetime business opportunity.(being early adopters of wfp). What they should have done is spent like mad- ionics, concepto2, whatever, and filled there boots. Those that have have done well.

But don't take this as critisism, it's just my view.

i can see your point, though to be fair to the DIY lot, they have contributed to the hosting, it still hasnt cost me anything which is nice, the DIY forum has become abit of a resource place now, all the questions have been asked and answered, do a search on your problem and it has the answer, its also been superseeded by CIU, once on CIU it was a frowned upon topic, if you DIY'ed then you were a cowboy who couldnt afford a built system, then various companies made it respectable and easy to order all the kit from 1 place

but look at chopsie, he has just built his system, once upon a time he would have got no ( or very little ) help on CIU, it would be " buy a system from XXXXX " now with a little help he got the van, got some rear seats and installed a system

Think thats a little unfair Matt, I think the problem came about that some people doing diy were doing it danrerously and giving other information which would risk others lifes, this is why diy got jumped on, or at least when I was reading the replies this was true.

I think diy has it's place but safety should always come first before cost.

I have seen hundreds of posts that run shivers down my spine. , one that always strkes me was put in tank, use some 2x2 screw on floor job done.. this is one of the reasons you got a hard time and rightfully so as it was clearly stipid and dangerous.

this must have been before your time then ian, as the DIY'er were just called cowboys and told to buy a proper system, it was also about how elitist some were, back then when a system was pricey, they didnt want any tom dick or harry getting a system, it used to go on a fair bit, thats why the DIY was started, just so people could ask questions and not be looked down upon

I'm always supprised at how many "health & safety experts" wfp has created! ::)

Danger is everywhere, risk is an everyday occurance, everybody puts economy before safety every day!

More so if you had done a course on h&S is quite shocking and opens your eyes, instead of the blinkers many have had on for years and years and years, me included.

This is why I think training is good and I also stand by the NVQ for window cleaning and ladder training and wfp training. Yes anyone can do it, but can they do it correctly and safe (that is the question)

The two words sound alike, one means a place, the other ownership, i tend to be okay on this but often mix up the words borrow and lend.

In fact you are more qualified than you think for the admin job ewan and you are being falsely modest. One of the forums problems, or at least if reports are to be believed the greatest irritations to Mike himself is suppliers coming on and getting a free ride. Some suppliers refuse to contribute even when they clearly benefit hugely and have a big following on the forum.

I know you like to hide your light under a bushel but what a great job getting rid of alex when no one else could ;D ;D

I think that's more the sort of joke that was mean't.

Everyone is limited by budget & knowlage. Otherwise we'd all be driving Ionics crash tested systems, if not, why not?
What in reality is just a statement of "my system is safer than yours but in a sense I'm a hypocrite because mine is not the safest & well I know it"
