This is draft 1 of my DIY website...
« on: November 29, 2009, 04:43:58 pm »
Well, thanks for your help so far, guys, this is the product of an afternoon of work and its only the first draft.

http://abcwindowcleaning.services.officelive.com/default.aspx

Please ignore some of the photos, I've just stuck them there till I replace them with better ones; particuarly in the 'About Us' area!

I haven't went through it with a fine tooth-comb for spelling and grammar mistakes, but any constructive critisism (or good old urine extraction  ;D) would be much appreciated.

Thank you!  ;D

Looks good, though personally would not have your photo with the blow up doll, may put some customers off.

That was just a little joke!  I plan to get some nice ones of us taken in work uniform!  ;D

Its not on line yet, I've just purchased the domain name, and even when it is I want it more as a brochure to put on my stationery, leaflets and mail shots.

You mean you did the website site yourself don't you, not that you've put a DIY site up to rival Matt's as the thread title states.

I thought it pretty good.

I'd take out the consider cleaning part... seems like your picky (you may be, but you dont want the customers to know that ;)  )

How about having a page for windy cleaning, another for conservatorys & fascias
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

Tosh yours is on par with matt batemans site.

needs the seo done as there is none/limited

Few pics do not fall into the trap matt has of adding water drips. slapsh and moving rubbish ect as they are so 2001/2203 and proved to be an anoying addition to a website (Matt thats why they are there right you player you..)

Keep simple pics that speak for you, and do not add thing that detract from what you are doing.

These are the tips I would give, seo after you are ready to go it live, welcoem to call me by the way tosh at no cost ;)

just rubbish results , hence why people pay  :P

Look is rarely the key to a good website, all the readers that know nowing about design and or marketing: this is a tip for you!. Free to start is not always the cheapest option ;)

See this happen 10 years ago and see the same thing in a couple of year happening again from this site alone......

I will still be here to listen to these post about it not working  ::)

I'll remove the 'consider', but I really want to keep the number of pages down to a bare minimum.  Thanks.

at the mo your site is like a needle in a haystack the size of the uk, no chance it will be found unless you type in your domain name( domain name is the web address mine is windowwashers.co.uk )

SEO mean Search engine optimisation which means in short if you dont have it tyour site will not work, will look good maybe, but will not give what you want, this is back end stuff in the source code of a website the part people do not see in the most pat.

To many idiots think they know about sites yet do not do this this means they do not have a clue wat they are talking about.

As I said your welcome to call me and I will help you out and may keep you off my back for a wghile :D

Just dont call tomorrow as I am at my m8's funeral and will be away all day traveling :(

A lot of these now have Meta tags and good SEO options now, not like it used to be.  And places like Mr.Sites £35 website usually gets good ranking if you set up the meta tags.

For free, maybe they don't want a huge amount of work to flow from it, just as a reference online to link to from other places.  So as for it working, then depends what they see as "working"  They've built it for free, so won't be expecting the phone to ring off the hook with enquiries the next day hopefully.

My free window cleaning site gets 4th for a local search, not because of the SEO, but because of where I placed it - on Vivastreet.   So it does depend on where you list the site also.  You can get 2, 3 or 4th for a local search that isn't a direct site link, but a linki through a free listing on maybe google business maps, vivastreet, Myfreeindex, gumtree, Yell.com, ablewise, freeclassifieds etc. etc.

I have free built simple sites that I've done on microsoft live -  http://www.dillonprojects.co.uk/
And on Moonfruit  - http://windowcleaners.mfbiz.com

Both these do well on enquiries, becasue of where I've listed the actual business/website, not because of SEO.

Just a few days ago I launched a new free built Car Care Blog -  http://carcarematters.blogspot.com/  that's already had over 100 hits in 2 days, No SEO done on that obviously, just where it's linked from.

To anyone using free website applications, make sure you set up Google Analytics, then you can monitor your hits, where they're coming from, where the person clicking lives (to the city), original hits, all sorts, very useful and free too -   http://www.google.com/analytics/

Reading post after post on this forum is like no other forum I use, loads of nit picking replies all the time, what's up with people ! Most don't seem to be able to just give an encouraging reply without having a go.  Is there no moderation  here to keep it friendly.

To many idiots think they know about sites yet do not do this this means they do not have a clue wat they are talking about.

Maybe they're not idiots, just missguided, or wrong.  Why not say " too many people are wrong........."    NO, say " too many idiots..........."

It's offensive to call people you don't know "idiots" just because they might be wrong on a subject.
I'd call someone doing something dangerous or aggressive to someone, something like that an "idiot"  , but someone who's just wrong and doesn't know it, just trying to help, harmless, is not an idiot, just wrong.

Using terminology like that is how aggressive arguments start on forums, and in person.

Cheers!  I may give you a call!  I have actually had an e-commerce review a few years back by some internet guru that would've cost me about £400 at the time.  I've got this 25 page report I haven't really done much with:

I should really read it, shouldn't I?

In fact, don't you run a site that people can link to ?  Meaning they could link their free site to you and get good results with no SEO at all ?
