2nd Man payment
« on: November 21, 2009, 08:06:53 pm »
For this poll we will assume that you have a second man working for you, you don't employ so you dont pay NI and Tax, not strictly how it should be but it happens.

This is for a % of the days total. Please vote twice as the one owning the work and as someone working for the owner.

Thanks

I'd never thought about a percentage. I pay £8 an hour, but fill him up with pasties and doughnuts etc.

A percentage might be better.

What do you expect to turn over? if its £200 then the % would be just less than 25%

earnings posts always start arguments, but here goes.

A couple of things opened my eyes. One was a guy sending a two man team out and expecting them to beat 400 before they went into bonus.Another was a guy i know who can crack 100 an hour.Maybe i am niave for believing them.

My own experience has been that i can match you on hourly, but do not do double with an extra guy.But while i was matching you there would be some hours and days worse than others. As a two man team my lowest after ex's is always better than my highest as a solo. It's pretty consistent too.

There have been a couple of rows about people bragging about earnings or other people not believing claims. This is second only to rows about religion and jw.So being a bit vague shuts the numptys and nellie know alls up (so i thought) while giving a full and very clear account to anyone with the intel to read between the lines.

I get good days with 2nd man and he only does downstairs which is only really a third quicker yet we crack out some good days regularly hitting my best ever solo days on a regular basis, i think having company and extra initiative to work as your paying wage!!

But once we are fully wfp and can do a house each i should see some real money come in :)

Matt,

I agree, it's always a confusing one, you want to pay them enough to keep your staff happy, but you also want to make a profit at the end of the day.  There's pro's and con's for both paying percentage and paying a flat wage.  If you pay a flat wage and are unable to do the work due to weather conditions then you are out of pocket, also if they are doing £200 a day for you and you're just paying them £48, then they feel they are being ripped off.

All our window cleaners are paid on what they do, they get 52% of turnover between them, ie:  If a team of two do £300 in a day they'll get £156 between them, or £78 each.

Normally work Mon - Fri, however due to the recent weather the last couple of weeks they've been doing Saturday mornings till 12 o'clock.

We supply all the uniforms, shoes, protective equipment, window cleaning gear, vehicles etc.

Good approach Ian.It's better than my way, but i'm feeling my way in this.I am tempted to make one of them senior.Ie. one of them is in charge and gets a higher wage, and the other is his helper. Then if the helper shows signs of responsibility give him his own van.
Just my thoughts.

if i send 2 men out for the day they get £100.00 each if they hit £500.00 which they usually do. what ever they turn over i simply take that number and divide by 5 to get they amount for the day, so if its £400.00 divide by 5 = £80.00 or if its £600.00 = 120.00 and so on
The best way to predict the future is to create it.

I'm about to take a guy on full time good thread to read for me, as still not sure which direction to go I think % basis is fair to both sides, The big problem I see on paying a set wage is if you increase your business and give him more work to do for the same money he will get fed up and quit or try starting up his own w/c round I reckon 45% is a good starting point.

What works for one will not work for another, you need to work out what you can pay before you pay it, all well and good giving away 50%60% or more if you can after all expenses are done,do it without working this out and you will be working just to pay there wage.

just to do the sums on £300 , 10% vat takes it down to £270, less 52% ie £156, this gives £114 gross. Defray £20 diesel, and running costs of £10, and we hit £84 net.

From the £84 net are admin, van and equipment etc. It's not a huge return.Anyone disagree with my sums?

i would say between 30-35% i mean like slumps said its got to be worthwhile to the business owner too and if for eample you have two vans and two systems a unit and all other costs you wont be making much out of paying some one 50-60%.

but if you have 20 staff then maybe you will ;)
