its simple to understand

when the air trapped inside a conserv ( with all the windows and doors closed ) gets warmer, it creates a vacuum. thus the shattered glass on the inside leaf of the double glazed unit

Never heard of hot air creating a vacuum. If it would be true the amount of vacuum you would need for that is just not possible by heating up air inside a conservatory.

That is possible, think of it like a flask.
Having said that a flask is air tight, if a conservatory was air tight then people would be collapsing etc when sitting in there. I've yet to know of an airtight conservatory as all have some ventilation somewhere.

As for why it has happened to one person twice when hundreds of us have never suffered it, only Rob can tell us what he does that we don't, or vice versa.

ive worked for PVCu companies, both installing and "trouble shooting"  , i spent 18 months "fault finding and trouble shooting " for a major installer

thats the cause of it, it might not be a vacuum in the true sense of the word, but thats the way i used to explain it

some ( if not most )do not have ventilation ( as that would cause drafts etc etc in thw winter ), as they rely on the windows being open, all windows and doors will have a rubber seal where they close, if the door from the house to the conserv is a PVCu patio door, it will have the same rubber seals, thus very little air pressure will escape, so the glass does go

anyways, i have posted what the cause was, if people choose to not believe me, then fair enough

What ever the cause, i dont think its his fault as he wasnt working on the inside and there was a big gap in when he worked on that part
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

Surely hot air would expand thus creating the opposite of a vacume i.e. the inner pane would be blow out rather than sucked in? A vacume would be when all the air is removed from the conservatory & wouldn't realistically happen?

my first post

i bet the inside door was shut

its the pressure as the conserv gets warmer, pressure builds up inside

other post, explaing the air cannot escape

i then used the word vacuum, the pressure does build up, thus my choice of word " vacuum " is wrong i guess as it would be the opposite of a vacuum ( which google has thrown up a few answers,

You do see some really poor workmanship though with conservatories & big differences in quality of the products.

Maybe cooling the glass rather rapidly might cause more of a vacuum between the sealed unit. Or maybe the outside pane contracts too fast for the inside pane?
My conservatory often gets above forty five degrees and close to fifty when left closed.

I've had 2 customer's windows shatter out completely whilst I wasn't even at their property. Both UPVC windows.

My take on it is that possibly the air on the inside had heated up, thus expanding and causing the inner pane of the unit to bow outwards. Then along comes some cold water on the outside, possibly causing the outer pane to bow inwards, due to thermal shock. Therefore the gases in between the two panes are compressed and resist this, thus causing the inner pane to give way under the strain.

Its probably crap, lets face it we always think we KNOW stuff, Im amazed at how many window cleaners think theyre Einstein; me included (the threads on how RO water absorbs dirt more readily always make me laugh and that its more acidic; which may be reasonably true but ineffectual so far as we are concerned). Well, maybe not Einstein but I like to think of myself as a Brad Pitt kind of character  ;D

In all seriousness, perhaps it was on its way out anyway, perhaps its just a coincidence; you know how you dream about someone one night and the next day they call  :o  :o  :o

I have never had a problem like this but would hate it to happen, so are we saying it would be advisable to open a couple of windows prior to starting the clean to let the inside release the so called pressure and temp.

Matt and Play school windows have come up with the only possible reasons a d/g pain could break.

One other point could be a fault in the glass on production which causes a weak point and a ticking, time shattering experience! ;)

Both custies have been fine about it as I had not been working on that particular window at the time.

I checked my water temp in my tank and it was 20degs (cold system), the temp in the con was 27degs.

Thanks for the enthusiastic commical replies but more thanks for the serious ones!  ;)
