Gutter repairs?
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:28:50 pm »
Been asked by several custies about repairing their gutters (which I don't really want to do). However, I have thought of carrying a few spares in the van like gutter clips, joints and rubber seals. Do plastic gutters vary much in size? Obviously they come in two basic shapes. Or would it be easier to whack some sealant of some kind in the joints?

most gutters from the last 15 years are the same size, you can trim the gutter to fit a smaller clip, just a jnr hacksaw and stanley knife

you would of course need to carry the shapes in all the colours aswell

as for whacking some sealant in, its a no-go

That's what I thought. I've got one where the painter took the gutters off, broke the tabs and pumped the joint with mastic - leaks like a seive.  ::)
I'll have to get longer ladders at this rate.

what do you reckon the best way to seal a joint without going to buy another joint?
i have in the past just used sillicon, just made sure it was clean and enougth
time to cure , it has never leaked, i do their windows for the past two years,i did the repair about a year ago.
what other method do you recommend ?

kind regards
paul

it can work, in the old days with cast iron gutters, you used to put in some gutter sealant and bolt together, it can work with plastic aswell, BUT plastic moves around alot when it gets warm in the sun etc, so the joint is likely to break again

you can get the gutter jointing sealant that never cures, it stays tacky forever ( well its s.posed to ), this can be used

the only way to do the job right it to change the joint ( or fit new rubbers if they are a similar size )

when i used to do this all the time, we used to have a bucket of rubber sections for the jointers, used to normally change the joint though

i fixed my leaking gutters last summer, i put the joint back together, its leaking again, its on the side of the house that gets all the sun

I ts allright cleaning them but dont offer to fix them because a soon as there is any problems like leaks ect they will expect you to fix it for nothing.

i suppose the thing is to advise what could happen, if it does it would cost extra to fix leak, say it would of leaked eventually anyway, it just happened sooner. tell them its better you fix the leak than a plumber (cost)
if you didnt clean them , they are only delaying the problem.

kind regards

yeah i helped an ex customer ( i wanted to stop his leaking gutter so i could get the conservatory roof cleaning job). I must have spent over 2 hours going back and forth repairing leaky points, and then 2 months down the line, i got dumped, and never got the conservatory roof job.

I stick to what i do best now, windows and conservatories, and i dont touch anything else. If they want a job doing, i say you better get someone thats specialised in doing that job, im neither trained or insured for it.

So stick to what your best at.. you dont go to a restaurant and ask for free food do you, no you always have to pay for it.

Same with me, any work needs done, then get the cheque book out. No more freebies except for family and close friends.
