I am looking to put a basic wfp set up together with backpack, and have now ordered or got most of the equipment.  One final decision to make and nor sure which way to go.??

I am on a water meter with mains 365 TDS.

My intention was to buy a 200gpd with the waste from membrane 1 running in series with membrane 2 and then T into a  DI UNIT, to get the most from the system due to being on a meter. I was going to add a 700ml DI. Hoping that the 700ml will produce a 000 TDS.

My other option is to buy a 100gpd unit with a 1400ml DI and pretty much guaranteeing that the TDS will be low due to 2 x 700 DI Units, but obviously not utilising the waste from another membrane. My intention from this unit would be to add another 100gpd at a later date when budget allows.

Given the two options above, would you,

A) Go for the first as it utilises the water output, and will/maybe give a TDS of 000 with the one unit   or

B) Almost guarantee a TDS of 000 due to the bigger DI and prolonged use of resin but wasting more water which would be costly on a water meter.


I know its probably how longs a bit of string, but interested in knowing what would be your priority. If the 700ml DI is capable of reducing the mains 365 tds after the ro unit, then I think that would be my option, but I would like to know of others tds values and if the 700ml DI unit is capable.

these ro are very bad on wasting water m8, I will depend on what amount of water you are using, I know I get flamed everytime I say it but I would get a 4040 very good on waste, saves time and that to me is the best saving, more expensive straight away yes.

if you dont want that option and slow water making you do nto mind just get some bigger di vessals (2 of thime and you resin will last a very long time.

I rarely use more than 150 litres a day doing tops only. I have a 100gpd unit with 3 x 700ml di vessels.My tds is around 350 and water pressure is only 30psi, so use a booster pump. I change the resin every couple of months. I found a single di wouldn't get the tds down to 0, so bought the double di vessel as an add on.

My set up works fine for me at the moment, but I would need a much bigger system to produce water for wfp on all windows.

I don't have a water meter, so I can't really help with that.

I'm looking at a pumped 100gpd for £106 and can get a triple DI for £58. So total £164. I was then thinking about a further 100gpd upgrade kit for around £40-£45, which I think would then get all bases covered. So would then hopefully have a pumped 200gpd system with triple DI units and hence (hopfully) 000 TDS.

thats interesting that a single DI would not get the TDS down to 000 with your mains TDS being 350 as mine is about 365 so I'm assuming mine also would not get down to 000, hence choosing the option of the triple DI UNIT.

A di unit will get most water to 000 but would eat it straight out of the tap, my tds is from 470 to 550 .
are you getting confused on the ro ? because 3 di units is over kill,

Get a 4040, it will save a lot of time and money in the long run, see Gaps water you can get a kit for around £600 its worth a minimal investment for quality!!

sorry Ian, could you explain what you mean by this.

Being very naive to this, I've tried to find as much info as poss. This is my understanding and please correct me if I'm wrong as I do want to get it right.

At the moment I'm only going to need a small supply (backpack upstairs and downstairs trad).

My water pressure is low, so have opted for a pumped system to make the RO unit more efficient (Is that correct??). I didn't want to get a 200gpd if the single DI wouldn't get the water to 000. So, made the decision to forgo the extra 100gpd and make sure the water is "polished" by adding another DI. Ian (the other one...lol) previously said in his post he had a tds of 350 and a single DI would not get it down, so with my TDS of 365 I thought I would have to go down the same route.

The triple DI is only 8 quid extra than the double, so for 8 quid I thought it would be worth having to get the result.

I may be barking up the wrong tree m8, as I said I'm new to this, so any advice appreciated.

Fieldsy I think your over complcating matters a little bit mate.

My out is 280 odd, got 200gpd and a 300 system. Hard Water area. 10 minute Run through system gets it down to 004ppm and then into 1 DI  {1 will do it } and this brings it down to 000pm.

I might be wrong but even with 380 odd a single DI should do it.

Fieldsy, you've done some good research but you are in danger of not seeing the wood for the trees.
You are obviously on a tight budget so the majority of replies are worthless to you, but you should just go ahead and buy what you can afford. With upgrades etc whatever you buy will get you through for a long time.
You are focusing on the micro and you really won't know for sure what your situation is until you have something up and running.
No need worrying about 0 tds until you know what your ro is producing. 0 tds will be achievable whatever you buy.
Pretty much the larger the ro, the better the efficiency. I wouldn't worry about a water meter bill for the amounts you are planning to use. 1000 litres costs around £1 and with a half decent ro and booster pump you should get 500 litres of pure water from it.

Thanks Mark, you've just answered a question I was dieing to ask, how much is it actually going to cost me, that is why I was concerned about the waste on a 100gpd. With another in tandem I assumed I would cut my waste down.

@John, now you have totally thrown me m8, p'raps I'll split the difference and go for the double DI...lol.

I am right to assume aren't I, that wether it be 100gpd, 200gpd or 300gpd, it makes no difference to the filtration, the membranes purely speed up the water production??

If efficiency is your goal.
Might take a year to pay for itself from a hard cash perspective, but having 1 will be worth so much more because it will free up your time. And how much is that worth?

I woulod be very veryu suprised if he get 505/50 waste from a 100gpd ro.

but as said for the amount of water your going to use it will do the trick. it costs a little ore than £1  day more so with a domestic ro but the amount is minimal to what you can earn from it.

Fieldsy dont workk about it, just go for it. plenty of people on here will help you.

on the waste water side of things so you know, the smaller it is the more waste there will be,  and inturn the more you spend on the ro lower the waste will be, but tbh I use 4040's to produce water and the costs of the water we use is minimal it really is, my wife went a little mad when I first started as she saw the volume of water we use, but in real money terms it really is pennies.

I just could not get my tds down to 0 using the single di unit built into my ro-man 100gpd ro. My tds from the ro was 12 without a booster pump and 5 with the pump.

I took some advice and bought a double di unit to add on to the system and I now have 0tds for a couple of months before needing to change the resin.

I know others have had no problems using one small di, but it just wasn't possible for me.

If you feel a a better RO is more your style later in life when you get a bigger wfp system, pay more for one then.
