4'x8' Sign....
« on: May 21, 2009, 08:09:06 am »
I had a call from my van sinage/work clothing bloke yesterday offering to design and produce a 8'x4' sign, and erecting it at a local cricket ground.... £100 all in and £40 a year thereafter.... Have any of you guys had success from this sort of advertising?

I bit his hand off of course because I thought it was a bargain :o

I have my doubts that this will work Colin. The fact that the price is so low might indicate something and how many people will the matches attract? To me this is like the business cards in supermarkets/diy stores/garden centres advertising. it didn't work for me and I've yet to find somebody who says it does - good luck though.

I have a feeling that the sign may be placed so that it's on view to the public on a busy main road, this is what I was hoping in any case..... I'll find out for sure today....If it's only on view within the cricket grounds I also have the same feeling that it may be a waste of time.... I don't even like cricket either :D No, I don't love it either ;D

At £100, you could spend that in worse places.

at that money i would do it. £ for £ you will get your money back plus good for getting noticed i believe that this sort of advertising works when you have a catchy logo as the average human remembers an image more than words especially in public places. this will hopefully trigger more response from say printed adverts. you could tie this into a strategy.

Say its a local cricket club find out who they are playing that sunday and drop leaflets that week in the village of the away side obviously depends on distance but its a strategy. you could even back this up by putting a small slogan on the bottom of the the sign look out for my leaflet through you door soon.
i believe its all about advertising that bounces off each other they all link together to create a brand.

will give you a buzz soon col for a chat been a while

you not spending £100 but giving it to your local community, local cricket on a Sunday  is a British tradition you'll help support it.

I've just sponsored a hole on a golf day run by the local Lions, it won't bring any work in but that's not the point., it will help local charities.

I did the same and the shirts still adorn the 'under 11's' Never got any work from it really but the great thing is I and my family were guests of honour at the prize evening and I gave out the trophies. Teams like these are run by volunteers, from the coach down, and it's a small price. I now have ties with a local cricket club, which I do enjoy, but never get to see cause i'm busy during the season :(.

I could change the sign, obviously at cost to myself!

Hi Colin,
i think it is a good idea for the money. £100 goes nowhere when it comes to advertising in local press etc.
Hope the response is good
Ben.

Even if I get 2-3 jobs a year, it's as good as paid for itself... More than can be said for my astronomic amount I've spent on a YP ad..... ::)

Sounds an original idea, hope it pays off although it's not a huge loss if you get diddly squat, and you'll learn a lesson too.

I have to say though.... More fool you if you spent an astronomic amount on YP, all you need is a few hundred a year to give you a good return.  I think the days of "bigger sells more" are gone, I reckon if you get up to and over a grand and you're into diminishing returns for your £

Jim, On a course I did we were told that the size of the ad equates to the potential earnings over a year. So I went for a size of ad that would poteneially make me £30k a year.... A full page ad would make you £100k.......

I know what you're thinking and I think it too.... "What a pile of poo!" I'm just coming up to my first year in business and I only found CIU about 6 months or so ago.... If I'd found it earlier, asked you guys what you thought about YP then I'd have probably spent that money on something more useful....

When I say astronomic, £1200 is astronomic to a new starter :'(

Still, you live and you learn and as I always say about regret, it's a waste of emotion.....

Famous last words!!!

£1200 isn't a king's ransom, no.  You could probably use the same size advert in monochrome and get similar results at a lot lower price - or for the same price get a bigger monochrome ad and get mroe work from it.  Reverse copy is very effective in YP, stands out better than colour IMO  ;)
