Oaky okay, I know its been done to death before

Im feeling paranoid, so bear with me.
Some swear by not touching them or going near them.
But.....I hate to see them dirty above the frame and glass, seems to spoil it for me.
So if you were to consider trying occassionally to clean them, not thinking every time here, maybe every thrid visit how would you plan your strategy?
I have been thinking the way to do it is to be sure no water is on at all when you brush them but to brush horizontally back and forth acrss them with a wet brush but no water flowing and then to rinse off with the brush ABOVE the vent so the water flows down and over it but not up into it.
Yes? No?
Shall I go and get the Dunces hat and stand in the corner?
What do you guys do?
