Vents

Oaky okay, I know its been done to death before  ;D

Im feeling paranoid, so bear with me.

Some swear by not touching them or going near them.

But.....I hate to see them dirty above the frame and glass, seems to spoil it for me.

So if you were to consider trying occassionally to clean them, not thinking every time here, maybe every thrid visit how would you plan your strategy?

I have been thinking the way to do it is to be sure no water is on at all when you brush them but to brush horizontally back and forth acrss them with a wet brush but no water flowing and then to rinse off with the brush ABOVE the vent so the water flows down and over it but not up into it.

Yes? No?

Shall I go and get the Dunces hat and stand in the corner?

What do you guys do?

Matt

You could alway just wrap a bit of scrim around your brush and wipe above the vents.

If you really want to clean above vents then hold the brush at a lower angle so the water runs over the vents instead of running up inside. Just give every window with a vent a quick blast above the vents and then down over them with plenty of water. Don't try cleaning the glass straight away. Do every vent on the building before starting the windows as per normal clean. Hot water helps as it dries much quicker so if you haven't got hot water, when you've finished the vents if the water's still dripping, use a cloth on the end of the brush to mop up any excess water still dripping from the vents.

I actually do have the water flowing.

I direct the water up into the vent whilst moving the brush briskly from side to side, messy, but never had any water enter inside of window, I think it works its way round the drains in the plastic frame and out the bottom.

Then good rinse from above, twice and ticketyboo, 1 clean vent.

The next time you go it will just need a light brushing over and if you do it every time it will not build up.

If you leave it 3 cleans you may have to work at it again, better to just lighty brush and rinse every time.

Steve vents dont 'vent' the window, theyre intended to vent the room.

An open vent with water squirted into will make the room wet.

after working so hard on the first clean to get all the filth out of them.. i never let it build up again....

i wash them every time... i dont have many so i do them right....

i do all the vents first..... rinse... then the frame.. rinse....then rinse the underside of the vent again.... so its dripping whilst i wash the windows.....

then i do that on all front and side upstairs windows.... then i go back to the first and rinse the glass... then the rest.... then the same downstairs.

Gazza do you do the part above the vent too, its generally just a strip of PVC no more than an inch in height that forms the curve of the frame which can hold dirt on the horizontal part of it?

Yes, i get the lot off ... i have to... if any water touches it , it will drip down as dirty water when i leave... i cant help myself now.... i feel better if the lot is washed and rinsed really well.

i onced left a vent and the bit above on a certain house (underpriced)

and after 5 or 6 cleans .. it was so dirty above, that i was tip toeing around it , trying to avoid water going near it.... in the end i scrubbed it all off... now all they all need is a quick wash and a good rinse... but i always look for something else to do, whilst the water stops running down.... just to be sure as you cant see whats happening up there.

Washing the vents as a wfp user is a bit like a trad cleaner going overboard washing the frames IMO. Customer doesn't appreciate or really notice the extra effort required to clean the vents for the same price as someone who doesn't bother cleaning the vents who completes the job a lot quicker and earns more money per hour.

Well, to be honest... when i was doing it trad... i did all the frames and priced it up for that... always....

there is nothing worse than seeing muck on a window, when a window cleaner has gone

Glass cleaning is ok , but i prefer window cleaning.

the vents are the worst thing on a window... spiders , muck , the lot...

its how i feel after a job that makes me do it too.

job satisfaction. i feel good.

I always do them first clean then every third one or so by going round all of them before starting on the glass.

May be a bit slower but I get recommendations and feel I've done a better job than Mr. Average.
It's a game of three halves!

I turn the water down low and work above them from side to side quickly.
Never seems to be a problem as first cleans they get a thorough going over.

The very last Trad clean before going WFP, I made sure everything was spotless- frames vents everything, made the first WFP ing a bit easier.Hope this helps :)
