Would be interested but price would be the major factor - any ideas what you would retail it at?

i keep saying i am going to fit a small bike cog where handle is then have a larger one higher up the reel with a chain linking them this way you are stood up to reel the hose in and it is geared like on a bike so for every turn with hand reel goes round twice. trouble is i am always too busy to get round to doing it.

havin a clue how much to charge? would need to source out all the items used.
only got it set up in the last few days so needs a bit of time to see full effect of its use.
be intrested to see if many of the wfp men on here would want one
it is definately not a handheld drill

I use a drill WW, but it's not hand held. I gave up trying to convert you all and I am sure many are content to remain hand crankers and i am content to let them. As Paul says it is so much easier but each to their own.

Lately I have been developing the hose tidy idea (the idea that clean pole hose that is kept off the floor maintains the pole in perfect condition for longer and cuts down on tangles). The previous solution that I posted a photo of (an electrical flex spool attached to the end of the reel hose) did have drawbacks such as a small time element and  a tendency to introducing twisting into the hose.

The eventual solution, now that i have cracked it, seems obvious.(it's also quite brilliant). Like Paul Mc I am wondering if there is an commercial mileage in this. I thought about asking slipnslide,or alex, or andrew if they were interested. I don't expect I would make any money, and it's not something you could patent, but there would be a certain satisfaction in seeing one of my solutions go mainstream.

hi discount. this idea of mine makes life so easier. i have the hose sitin on shelf in van roughly shoulder level. it easier to reel out hose as well at this height. when hose is reeling in i stand and feed it through towel to keep clean. i can adjust the speed as well. if anyone wants to give me their email i will pass on information on costs etc when i know more myself. i would like to put up pictures but  i dont want it copied.

Saw some cops diving for a body on the news tonight, one of them had a hose reel mounted on his back. It looked like gas pipe but i expect it was some kind of air-line.

That sounds really good Paul, like you mine is mounted shoulder height above the tank, and like you I use a towel on winding in. I/ we looked at guidance mechanisms (they are available) but I found like you this is as good a way as an any. To start with i used a drill with a direct socket driver to a deep 22m socket with a two speed drill on the slower speed,(having removed the winding handle) then to address the snatching issue I put a dog leg clutch into the drive.

WW, I was just joking.

I've been struggling with the pole hose tidy thing for a little while now, and I can't really think of anything, yea sure the purefreedom thing that you stick on the pole, but that takes too long, and it just irritating. It's driving me mad. Please let me know when you are ready to share Discount, I know people have giving you a hard time over things, but I always look forward to hearing your ideas about new things.

Thanks.

This is going to sound really stupid, but it is the answer both in practical terms( it works, takes no time up, releases quickly when you need the hose to extend the pole, and doesn't introduce kinks or twists into the hose) and is also a very elegant mathematical solution. I will probably have to post a photo but I will try and explain.

Get some plastic pipe, say inche and half diameter, four inches long. You need three bits, tape them together like a honeycombe and tape this on the reel hose near the hose tap. What you do is work on loops.

When you have a lot of excess pole hose you put one loop down one pipe, and another down the second, and any remaining down the third. This hangs down in three loops loose by the side of your body as you work. It is a very fast method of either securing the pole hose off the ground or releasing it quickly. No twisting is introduced and no tangles ensue.

My idea for a product would be to have a harness and the honeycombe attachment as a perfect van mount working solution.

How do fire hoses rewind - the sort you see on factory walls? Are they spring loaded? Could a reel be tensioned like a seat belt then maybe a short tug on the hose would bring the tension back on to rewind?

What about a simple electric winch attached by some means to the hosereel spindle?
