I did this!!!!
« on: January 28, 2005, 03:46:23 pm »
Last week I went to a house where a large ink splat from a leaking bic type biro pen had ruined a white wool ( 80 /20 ) carpet. I got most of it out using solutions but was left with a faded blue mark about the size of a penny. The lady of the house had already had a go with vanish, so that could well have set the stain before I got there. Rather then leave the mark as it was ( right it the middle of the room ) I asked her if I could have her permission to use bleach :o

I applied the bleach using a cotton bud and extracting straight away. And guess what........it came out ( or covered it ). A week later and everything is still OK.

Bet I get some criticism for this one, but in this case it worked.

Has anyone else used this method?

PS If anyone else has a go and it goes wrong it wasn't my idea ;)

Gary,

What was the carpet fibre?

'Theoretically', solution-dyed synthetic fibres can tolerate hydrochloride bleach

It was a high mix wool. The lady didn't mind me trying bleach as anything would have been better than the ink stain.

The bleach used was Domestos. ( About 1 cotton bud full ).

Gary,

It seems you were lucky - chlorine and wool do not make happy bedfellows - oxygen would have been a safer option.

John, am I right in assuming the new trend of heavily advertised 'Oxy action' supermarket DIY spray bottles are all Oxygen bleaches?

Ian,

You are correct in your assumption - and I have seen several examples of the damage they can cause - spot dyeing course anyone?
