SHRINKING
« on: June 03, 2008, 10:14:59 pm »
hi all am new 2 this forum and carpet cleaning, av been doing window cleaning for 10 years now and fancied a change i am doing both at the min.

Anyway i was just wondering if the axminister and wilton carpets are more prone 2 shrinkage as av heard something along these lines or which carpets u should stay clear ov for this reason and how 2 tell.

i have been on a course with extracta and use the EXEL machine but am still a bit weary with carpet that are more prone 2 shrink.

any info would be great

Are you in a hurry, or just trying to save effort ?

Carpet Guy(Rob)
I myself just type in whatever i feel is necessary to fulfil and justify a need!
If it comes across as not being the good Queens ENGLISH grammar, but is obviously-(by myself anyway) quite comprehensible and easy to read, then where is the problem-and certain need to poke sticks?

Don't be so touchy Damian, if you find that offensive, you must be a very sensitive soul  :(

Paul

None of us are perfect, as my inability to read a bag of spanners proves.

If you're unsure about carpet types the best advice  (apart from attending a course) would be, to avoid overwetting. I'm sure Extracta would have informed you of the principals of prespray, aggitate, rinse / extract.

Most carpets which are prone to shrinking have hessian backing and it's the backing that shrinks. Axminster is a looser weave and can be stretched. Some Wiltons shrink alarmingly and won't stretch back.

So...............until you gain experience  / knowledge, use Micro Splitters there are many around and they are simple to use.

Watch out for any badly fitted carpets and especially Belgion wiltons these are usually a polypropelene fibre on a hessian back, the easy way to spot these is to do  a float test, this means getting a fibre and placing it in a glass of water if it floats its polyprop. If this is the case lift the carpet at one corner and inspect the backing if its a hessian back you have a belgian wilton. These carpets have the most chance of shrinkage make sure they are well secure on the grippers if not you can use tacks and nail down every 12 in or so. Keeping moisture down, plenty of vaccum passes and some dryers in place and you should be fine.
Where are you based if your in my area you are welcome to come along with me for a few days i have a few of these carpet types to clean in the coming weeks.

BW hessian back? are you sure?

I was very concerned about shrinkage when I started, which is a good thing. But to be honest I really think you would have to go some to shrink a carpet, bar a BW. In fact the only carpet I've seen pulled off the grippers was under 4cm of water at the time.

As said check if BW with a float test and check grippers are good all round On all carpets.

Only  shrunk one a little , it was not on grippers customer new it could shrink.

If I was  R Clean I would contact Extracta and get them to talk you through it.

They were happy enough to take your money for the course.

Rob Iwould be grateful if you would refrain from picking on new members.

I admit I cannot spell and cannot put Goggle on my present work station as it a corporate one, and do not have the time to cut and paste from word.

Like Damien I think of something and fire away.

My mistake Mike i mean jute backing with the weft shots running in both directions crossing each other. If these carpets arent secured down they dont take much shrinking when cleaned by an untrained operator. Always do your basic checks and you should be fine.

I shrunk my first ever carpet Friday , a very expensive wool berber , there was no gripper around the fire place and patio doors . Fortunately my brother in law is a carpet fitter and he managed to rectify it for me on Monday evening . not a very pleasant weekend couldn't sleep with worry , Like Mark said do your basic checks and don't get complacent

speak to john at restormate in cramlington ( sure you can google him)  he'll be the nearest source of info for you and he a lot near to you than extracta.

I only live in north shields and haven't been into extracta for donkeys now.

I shrank a bw about six years ago you could hear it creaking on the grippers, told customer don’t worry will be back in two days to refit, collected money and left, did refit with the aide of a tool which not many carpet fitters know about and got another £50 for my trouble.
