Its a tough one. The obvious thing to say would be to go straight back there and explain in no uncertain terms that the cash you were given was dodgy. Hopefully they will give you proper notes. But they may be genuinly innocent and didnt realise they had naff notes, and take great offence to this thinking that you are trying it on ???

My hunch would be that they knew they were fake, but let's face it if you go back they're probably going to deny it >:(

I would go back or at least ring them, and see what happens. If they deny it or refuse then there isnt a lot you can do...

John,
I would report to the police immediately that customer has not come accross these by accident maybe the odd one but not 5. You could save someone else having the same problem.
You could take them back to the customer and explain if they are not changed you will report to the police.

The proper thing to do is go to the police.

If you were less worried you hypothetically could blackmail them, palm the notes off to some other mug, or go back and take a hammer to their fingers.

They gave you more than one then that is fraud ........return them and explain that if they do not replace them then you have to report them to the police and they will have to say where they got them etc ............ had 2 fakes in a bunch of 14 from customer once, did add that my brother in law is a copper and i said he advised me to follow this course so i was not out of pocket  ;)

I still think it's a long way to go for some tinnies.

I take it with cash is alright means you did leave a receipt for the work done?
If you didn't (you know where I'm going with this) then you're between a rock and a hard place. They could denie you did the job or even turn it into 'do what you want because you were defrauding the IR'
With this quantity in one transaction I'd be ringing the alarm bells with these people. Even if they do change then for real the chances are they are going to offload them and more onto someone else.
This really should be a Police matter but the choice is yours.

To be fair you should go back and give them the chance to change them, as

even if they didn't know they are still liable for passing them on, if you don't get

any joy tell them your going to the police and then do it straight away.

Fake money does get passed around so i think you have to give them the

benefit

of the doubt first!

Rather than modify my post I'll add this.
Having one fake is possible, having two is unlucky, having FIVE is damned suspicous to me.
What is the numbering on these. Sequencial (sp) normally only come from a bank cash machine and the chances of fakes from these is highly unlikely.
So the chances are they have done a CASH job for someone to be in possession of this quantity....barganing point there ;) or they are part of a fake scheme, even buying £20 notes on the cheap.

Thats not on, should have gone back to the client and got your money changed, if he denied anything called in the cops, you can always write an invoice out to prove you were they even if he siad you never gave him one, who gonna believe him, he already moving fake notes, and if cops are called chances are if he gave you 5 then he would have more,

but no instead you go a screw another hard working guy, Mr. Patel, who had sweet FA to do with any of this. You are out of order John and persaonlly I think they should kick you off this forum.

Well there is a fair chance that when Mr Patel does his banking tomorrow, the bank will bring it to his attention. He will then check his garage cctv for cash transactions, he will then check that against the forecourt cameras and then the plod will be making a visit.
Backed up with an admission on here and the offence is a very serious one. Money laundering, deception, obtaining goods by deception.
I did ask you to remove the admission but clearly some on here just don't want to listern.

"Don't worry lads just been to fill me van up with juice , Mr Patel at the local garage didn't notice , so not my problem"
Watch out. Number plate recognition technology is used in many forecourt garages.

 I am not a criminal

yes you are.

but don't worry about it we all have the potential to be a criminals. the only thing that differentiates  us all is the price it takes.

for you it was £50-£60 quid.

This reminds me of the time my mother had her 50th birthday bash. My cousin came up to me and said 'heres a tenner im doing really well for myself'. I bought a round of drinks with it. An hour later he asked if Id still got the tenner. I told him i bought some drinks. Turned out it was a fake note which I got back out the till an apologised (because im soft). The front looked fine but the back had Basil Fawlty and Manuel on it!

I don't know if John is winding us up or not about passing on the fake notes, I hope he is. But if not I think it is a very mean trick.
The first thing to do would be to go back to the customer and if no satisfaction there then go straight to the Police.

John,
Maybe Mr.Patel is struggling to make ends meet with his family, you didnt seem too happy that someone scammed you but your quite happy to do the same to someone else i think what you have done is out of order, make no wonder all us carpet cleaners seem to get tarred with a bad name, its disgraceful :( :(
