folding the Algarde to stop the flow is the best thing about it. To stop the flow when leaving the pole,
I have a small piece of hose attached to the pole with a bungee band. I slip the folded Algarde into this piece of hose and the flow stays turned off. I use a 60psi pump and Varistream, never had the Algarde balloon yet.
Dai why do you not get a tap most be losing loads of time over a week doing it this way.

Ian, I paid about £35 on ebay (including delivery) for a 100m reel.

I paid a local aquatics shop about £10 for 15m once...  ::)

I will be interested to see your photos Bazzy.  :)

Algarde 4mm/6mm is one make, Yamitsu is another.
 www.koizone.co.uk/products/aeration/air_accessories.html

I have seen it as low as £12.99 and from a wfp supplier as high as £80 The last bit on the reel usually is a bit flattened but its ok  you cannot get the water through 100m though, I use 33m (third of reel) 50 is about max.
If you need pressure use Raindrip micro irrigation black pvc instead.
