Jason, which company is this that offers this tariff? Do you know if that tariff allows the number to be diverted to a mobile?

In a way i would say you may get calls as its free but as to the quality of callers, who knows?

Are you sure about that 1p a minute cost to phone an 0845 number?
Many of them are up to 5p a minute (mine is 3.5ppm for the one phoning in and I pay 2p a minute to receive it).
It does vary a fair bit.  If you pay a monthly rental, the ppm cost is usually lower.  If you don't, the ppm cost is higher.
They are not local rate calls either.  They are "lo-call" rate calls.  Sounds the same when you speak it but different in practice.
I could have got mine free of charge but wanted a memorable one.  They usually cost more.  I paid £200 for mine.  I know there are better deals around than mine but it's no great cost to me.  After laying out the initial £200, it only costs me under £1 a month to run.  Anyone phoning in pays 3.5p per minute.

I use an 0845 number (from http://www.uk2numbers.co.uk), but I'm thinking of going back to just a normal landline number as I think people like to know that you are local.

Although in 2008 I'm going to be chasing a lot of commercial work, so would it be best for me to continue with the 0845 number?  Decisions, decisions...

I use an 0800 number it costs me £4.99 per month and i get 400 mins free with it. it would take a lot to reach 400 mins of incoming calls. i probably on ly recieve a few calls on it a day/month most of them come to my mobile number i use. I think the 0800 number looks good and just adds to the professional image i portray!

Call08 are the best company I can find so far.

For £4.95 per month you get an 0800 number with 1000 free minutes!

i had that with my old 0845 number myself something about an unpaid bill b ut never contacted me. and i had some hassle with there customer service before as well. i believe they have upgraded there set up since all this happened. well so i was told anyways ;) i ain't had any trouble with my 0800 number though.

That looks like a good deal Andy. i have trouble using 400 mins net alone 1000 but better to have more for the same money ;)

I think you've hit it there when you say that it can depend what type of work you are seeking.
I had another reason.  Although I don't intend to go far, there's a fair chance I will be moving in a couple of years.  That could mean needing a new number.  With an 0845 number, all I ned to do is arrange for it to be pointed to the next number instead of informing hundreds of people of the number change.
