I think the duck logo is great,.. its easily noticed and won't be forgotten in a hurry,.. what more do you want?
As for the landline number,.. you could always peel it off again if you decide it isn't working out,... or leave it off for now and have the option of adding it at a later date. Its only sticky vinyl,.. its easy to change!
Getting the van signage done will make you look more professional and will definitely bring in more work. It'll pay for itself very quickly,.. and keep on paying for years to come.
If you are looking for more work quickly, you need to "brand" yourself, and make your brand known. I'd suggest a small flyer drop (5000 odd, and single colour cheap printing is fine for this type of flyer) with the same logo on the flyer in the areas your van is most commonly seen in,.. and maybe a couple of cheap ads in the parish rag. Even getting the logo on your work shirts might be a good idea.
I'm still getting calls from a flyer drop I did 10 months ago,.. so it's definitely worth it.

Most big companies have some sort of logo or memorable design.

Check out:

IBM
Microsoft
Dell
Google
Bentley
OCS
Barclays
NatWest
HSBC
etc.. etc..

Personally I am with Dave on this one. A professional logo is the way to go as it allows you to expand more in the future.

However, if you are happy with the duck then go for it!  ;)

How the hell can a logo dictate expansion? ::)

Not having one may slow you down, yes.
It doesn't matter what it is, as long as people can identify with it.

I can't expand beacuse of the picture on my van? ;D
I've never heard such waffle. ::)

In branding terms the nearest successfull parrelel would be the geek squad.com who fix computers. He had them drive round in big geek vans and wear trousers that were too short with white socks.

Don't laugh they made a lot of money and are Global.

If it's a no on the Quack! noise, what about my idea to dress up in a duck suit?

Did you ever see that Gene Wilder film where they did chicken song? Absolute classic.

I can just see it now:

woman:ohh I wish I had a window cleaner
other woman: have you seen that guy going around, hes a window cleaner
woman:whats his name
other woman: I cant remember but he has a yellow duck on his van

it will work, as long as the duck is bigger. My van is orange so people get to know me that way! Luke

you must be on a wind up, i'll take it as you are  ;) ;D

i think squeaky should take it as a compliment, 6 pages of replies to a question about his sign writing, if that was anyone else on here you'd be lucky to get a page. just shows how much of an impact you have round here squeaky good or bad. take it all as a big compliment, i would!  8)

Your van is orange because it's ex RAC you berk. Sorry Luke I'm joking again,

Giving the leaflets out dressed up is a good idea.

I am very interested in branding and found this topic interesting before squeaky even posted it. He will confirm that I have been asking what his ideas are for this for months, I told him to have a think about it when he went on holiday.

The yellow plastic duck is quite a good idea, but not superb, I can remember it used to be his avatar at one time. You've got to bear in mind that i'm a very pedantic person (argue over insignificant details), and the only duck connection I can see is that yellow plastic bath ducks are supposed to squeak.

I've never heard such waffle. Roll Eyes

I didn't mean it like that.

Here is an example of what I mean:

You are asked to quote for a posh large office block. You turn up in your van with a big yellow duck on the side... The other company turn up in their van with a smart professional logo on the side... Who will they take more seriously?

However, I don't see the yellow duck being a problem if you are only ever going after domestics.

Do you see what I mean now though? (probably not).

When I listed companies like IBM etc... I was just pointing out that many big companies have simple logo designs.

I wasn't comparing myself to any big companies!

IBM were famously a very conventional company, while Apple computers were more crazy, doing things differently, dressing casually. As most people know if it wasnt for Microsoft stealing their operating system they would be the ritchest company on earth. Anyway what I'm trying to say is that that type of marketing can be very succesful! Luke

Microsoft didn't steal IBM's operating system.  IBM sold it to them!

I used to work for IBM  ;)
