Hi all,

How do you have your reel outside the vehicle set up?

(not interested in ports!)

I have my trolley hose reel usually mounted in my van connected with with a 2m length of standard 1/2 inch garden hose from pump to reel. I always leave it connected as I cant be doing with drips.

When I lift it outside my van (side door) I can manage to shut my door without kinking the hose meaning I can lock up.

But the problem I'm having is that when I wind it in, the hose connected to the reel starts to curl up on itself and looks like a pig's tail. that really annoys me as I leave the real pressurized so cant pull hose off easily unless I drain the reel and only then can I disconnect and straighten it out.

Can anyone tell me how I could have this set up better???

Here is my prob alex.

Just pulled the hose out and this happened. The more it kinks the harder it gets to pull.

And when winding it in it's even worse.  What a pain!!!

Any ideas?

I've had the same problem but I swapped to a brass female connector from plastic one and it doesn't happen now, I think the brass connector came with something I brought from gardners,  connect it to  the brass male on the hose real  on the other end use a stop connector and you won't loose water or pressure.

The hose would still turn round and the connection an the middle of the reel spins round when winding in/out? It will always turn. If you get me?

Simply fit one of these



to the side of your reel and then plug your hose connector to it, it should stop this happening.

I know what you mean I have another connector that does exactly what yours does, with the brass connector It doesn't happen though.
Having said that though it looks like Alex has a better solution.

I ordered one of those swivel fittings from     

Please can you look at my top picture and advise me my best option.

At the moment my hose runs directly from my pump outlet to the reel which is not ideal.

I would rather have a length of hose about 5m long attached to my reel with some kind of end on it which wont leak and will allow me to plug into the pump outlet.

Does that make sense?

I have the same fitting as chris & no problems (brass) but I would sooner have what Alex has shown.

Hi Clear Vision,

I understand what you want. I use a similar method to allow quick change of tanks and pumps in my trailer system.

What I use is a '1/2 barb - Pro End stop' fitting on the pump end .

and a '1/2" barb-pro tail' fitting on the hose side .

This will prevent any leaks but will still allow you to connect quickly.

Wondering where you got that stainless steel hoselock type fitting from? the one which is conected to the clear half inch hose.

I use the brass conector's on my hose reel, but find the plastic hoselock fittings between hose reel and outlet ports not very water tight.

Can you get those female hoselock fittings in brass or stainless steel? How do you find using the clear half inch hose as apposed to the regular yellow half inch plastic hose. Does it kink very much as it's not as flexable? If you can remember where you got that fitting let me know, as i'd like to try some.

Hi Simon I thought it was gardiners, but it must of been  B+Q.
I only use clear hose for the patch lead from van to hosereeland from Ro via Di  to the tank in the van so its always pressurised at about 100psi, that tends to sort the kinks out  the reason I use it is I don't trust garden hose especially the stuff lined with black rubber, I don't like the idea of anything polluting the water but that's probably me just being really fussy.
I don't think it kinks any worse that any other hose though.

but the hose from the pump to the reel should not be moving at all... i have a cheapo  connector attached and when the reel spins, the hose connector does not... hence the piece of hose does not move.

so why is yours moving?

Hozelock connectors try to spin under pressure but they are not really designed that well. The brass connectors have ball bearings in them that roll around the male shaft with much less resistance. The brass elbow from Gardiners is a superb little gadget.

I think you have miss read somewhere.

Take a look closely at my pics.  :

I dont have a joint between my pump and hose reel which I really should.

Matthew you probably would be better off running a hose to the rear of the van and through the floor its easier to connect at the back and it doesn't matter what side you park on.
