Public Liability Insurance
« on: February 09, 2007, 12:13:11 pm »
Apologies but I've searched the last two months of topics and can't find what I was looking for.  My public liability insurance is ending next week, and Ember JD have found the 'best' price is through AXA at £112.06 at £1m cover, even though I have one year no claims.  I've seen most people on here only pay £70-80 and someone recommended a site but I can't remember who that was.  I've checked A-Plan but I don't want it to include a van.  My cover last year cost me £143 which they said was because I'd just started my business, but I think £112 is far too much for my second year considering I've made no claims and had no accidents.  Are there a list of sites I can go to, to get a few quotes?

Thanks

Chris

Wow insuredrisks just gave me an online quote of £63!  Attempted to read through the policy - am I covered if I get injured?  And is the cover for damage of third party property including or excluding the window I am working on?

Thanks

Chris

ha!  you lot don't know how lucky you are - cheapest price I can get (just for me, no claims in the last 5 years) is £280 for 2million cover with a £750 excess - its daylight robbery over here.

no you will not be covered if you are injured...you would have to claim against another persons public liability if you felt they had an influence on your injury.
YOUR public liability covers you against claims against you for damage to property or people as a result of your window cleaning activity. The glass you are working on is not covered.

If, for example, your ladder blew onto a car or person, you will be covered for the damages incurred up to a total of £1million minus the excess.

It seems to be a standard restriction with a lot of insurance companies:

Window Cleaning Height Restriction  (SE13)

The COMPANY will not be liable for

i. any liability caused by or arising out of or in connection with
   a. the cleaning of exteriors of buildings of more than 4 storeys in height
   b. work on roofs or from slings or cradles

ii. damage to glass signs or other items being cleaned

Though it doesn't clarify whether it includes/excludes extension and garage roofs, which I need as I have quite a few that I walk along to work.

Does MMA include roofs?  From their website it's not exactly clear what you need to know to get a quote!  Did you ring the first number at the top of the contacts page?

OK thanks.  An online quote with AXA is £102 and says nothing about excluding roofs.  I'll give Alexander Swan a call as well as I'm keen on getting Personal Accident insurance too, which AXA wouldn't give me for some reason.

Having looked everywhere I have gone with Allied Insurance in Wigan. www.clean-insure.co.uk

They are slightly more expensive but DO include damage to the windows, frames etc.  I have also insured my poles for just £77.50

No point having insurance if it doesnt cover you for the glass.

well to replace a pane of broken glass is about £40-£50 and your excess will be £250 or thereabouts, so it is worthless whether the glass is insured or not.
You will be very unlucky to break a double glazed pane.

you could always scratch it.  who says you have to break it.  and some of the properties i work on have panes probably costing £800-£1000 each.

I wont take that chance.

Allied Insurance have just quoted me £80 through Fortis Insurance, which I've just accepted and that includes walking on roofs, in fact anything up to a height of 15m, but not including the window I'm working, which I'm not fussed about.  And it's not tools either, but I've got my ladders insured under a different policy.  Thanks for the advice guys

Chris

EDIT: midlandsinsurance.co.uk have just got back to me with a quote of £82 and same as above, so worth checking them out too

you want to get on confused.com or nother company like that, they'll get you the cheapest around.
I have been told you shouldnt put down property maintainance as your business, as the premium is higher.
