BED BUGS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:06:44 am »
Just watched an article on bed bugs on BBC news................seems they're on the increase and according to the news item, one firm is cleaning up to 70 beds per day.

The bed bug, is not the dust mite, it's much bigger, looks like a small beetle.

Obviously a big opportunity here...............but ..............do you require to be Local Authority registered.........whats available..........who supplies it.

Just a thought, particularly, as an American has lodged a claim against a London Hotel after spending a sleepless night, due to bed bug activity.

Also love to know the answer to this George, I have cleaned Mattrasses before with upholstery tool but am concerned about drying times.
Is there another method?

Ozone machine. As far as I am aware everything dead within the hour (no matter how small & microscopic). No physical cleaning/wetness  ;D

Trouble is the machines are about £600.00 (the last time I checked).

Been checking ozone generators which are great for killing odours and disinfecting, but no mention of killing bugs...............so far.

Has anyone found information that suggests they will kill bugs ?

Ooh, not so sure now! But this article says so, although it indicates cfr ozone?

ABC Cleaning Services, an eco cleaning specialist for domestic and commercial customers, is launching a detergent-free, ozone-assisted cleaning system, The Ultimate Clean, which is kind on soft furnishings but fatal to bacteria, viruses and mites – including the rampant bed bugs which have recently plagued both Sydney and New York. The company will be demonstrating its new product at the Catering and Hotel Exhibition, Bournemouth on 8-9 March, 2006.

Ideal for hotels, hospitals, rest homes and halls of residence, ABC Cleaning Services’ system is the first ozone-based cleaning system, now available in the UK, to use a new type of sanitation process imported from the USA. Stateside, the system has proved itself in the natural sterilisation of all soft fabrics - especially carpets, sofas, mattresses and curtains. As the ozone-based product not only cleans but removes all bacteria and mites from furnishings, it reduces allergens and potentially dangerous viruses such as MRSA. All treated fabrics dry within two hours of cleaning - so hotels, hospitals and halls of residence can make rooms available on the same day as treatment.

Research from Berglund & Associates* revealed that the ozone product, when introduced into the continuous flow recycling (CFR) system, had a 99% success rate at removing microbial contamination from carpets - including E coli and the common pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which thrives in medical environments. A more comprehensive study conducted by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health demonstrated the disinfecting power of ozone in the CFR system against a broad spectrum of micro-organisms. Cleaning carpet swatches which had a heavy microbial load resulted in a 91- 96% reduction in the unwanted ‘nasties’.

Furthermore, Tamarack Environmental Inc. treated a metropolitan school in Minnesota, USA, where staff members were suffering respiratory distress. The company found traditional vacuuming techniques, followed by hot water extraction, doubled levels of the fungus - Aspergillus versicolor - in the carpet. A second treatment attempt using a biocide 'oxine' caused another 50% increase in microbial levels. However, treatment using the CFR ozone assisted cleaning system removed 93-99% of all viable spores.

Bob Davis, managing director of ABC Cleaning Services, comments: 'Our new service uses ozone to clean and sterilise all fabrics within any room. Ozone is the second most powerful oxidant known to man - only fluorine gas is stronger. I hope all public premises will periodically be treated with this method, which will reassure guests that their rooms are clean and free from infections. Our treatment system will also eradicate the growing infestations of bed bugs that have recently swept both New York and Sydney. Guests will rest undisrupted while it really is RIP to bacteria and bugs.'

Bed bugs are visible and can be vacuumed up and also killed by proprietory insecticides. Ozone would have little effect on these or dust mites unless it was used in highly concentrated doses which would be hazardous to humans.

Hi guys,
I`ve used a cfr ozone generator on bed bugs and it kills them stone dead.
the problem is one of exposing the bugs to the gas.If you had a glass room, nowhere for them to hide
then it`s perfect, the difficulty lies in the fact that these bugs make themselves flat and are able to squeze
into the tiniest of cracks. They also are wrapped up in bedding and clothing, the trick is to open up everything, lift matresses, open drawers and wardrobes.Rule of thumb is where there is no air flow the gas wont go, even with a fan opperating which is a must as ozone is heavier than air.Close windows and
seal the door with tape if neccessary[some people are very sensitive to the slightest smell]

Regarding the amount of time,it varies, an average bedroom i`d leave 3hrs plus 1hr for the remaining
ozone to reconvert to oxygen then enter the room open a window job done.
Odour removal is faster.I`ts a good tool to have in your van but if only occasionally used is expensive
and might be difficult to justify.I use mine on average 6 times a year but I do`nt advertize for this kind of
work.

hope this helps
RICE.

The trouble with bed bugs is not the beetles which are relatively easy to deal with. The problem as with most pests of this type is the larvae. These are small maggots which burrow into the padding of the mattress and feed on the detritus. As has been said Ozone won't penetrate this deep so although you may kill the adults the offspring remain unharmed and eventually turn into more adults. This is why I believe some kind of residual insecticide would be the best method are a means of pumping the Ozone deep into the mattress.
Robbie, Nemesis Carpet cleaner will destroy insects by degreasing there joints. This would be effective on fleas, dust mites etc but the same problem would exist as to dealing with deep seated larvae.

This discussion takes me back a meeting in Sheffield about 9 years ago, when a group of us were introduced to a product, which was developed for the glass industry, but was discovered to have incredible , protection capabilities, on just about any surface...............plus, it killed every little creepy crawly thing, at the egg stage, as it had microscopic spikes which punctured the eggs, effectively killing them off at the earliest stage.

The product was known as AEGIS and is used in many microfibre products.

Unfortunately, the licence was taken over and it became unavailable to the average cleaning company.

The only way I could have got it, was to become a distributor, with a large investment !!!!!!!!!
