There was a topic the other day & a few like myself lift the hose reel out the back & a few mentioned about the reel being dragged along while pulling out the hose.

I gave it some thought, ( made my brain cell ached ), i took a couple of tent hooks with me today. Hooked them on the hose reel & pushed them in, worked a treat.

hook them over the base and stick ends into soft ground?

Why not screw them down into back of van?

i've had hose reels standing square on the floor with the hose on both ways, if it ain't secured down then its going to fall over, maybe if you pulled it out in a straight line then it might stay up, not when you pull round corners it will fall over most times

This would only work if you had a soft ground on the job like mud or grass if not then it's virtually impossible i'd think!

i to have had it out the van before i secured it to the van floor and it never once stood up correctly when used, i've always used the red metal hose reels so no crap reels, just never stood up straight at all hence why they are now bolted to the floor, its once less thing to be mucking about with when i'm out working.

Do you shut your back doors up or leave them open?

well i didn't up until we were talking about it the other day, and someone mentioned that if you have microbore it will fit between the door rubber and the van, i tried it works so now van stays locked up when not near it

Sometime this or next month, I am going to build out of steel plate, a hose reel holder that will swivel 360*,

I use a Trailer mount, so I can fix it to the top of my tank and pull the hose out in any direction.

When I have built it, I will post some pictures of it.

I was going to use two sheets of steel plate, just for the weight in it,
I will drill and weld a post in the bottom plate, this will have to be welded from the underside, so that the top plate can swivel, don't know what on yet mabe a large greased washer
I will also bend some steel to enable me to lock my hose reel into position with just a twist of the reel, this will enable me to release it from the plate Quickly.

Jeff have you thought about using a roller bearing,to fit between the plates,

I did gaz but they may well be a little on the high size, to keep a good balance between the plates, so what I thought about was a  phosphore bronze bearing, these can be very flat, and are used in some electric motors, so I know they are hard wearing.

as long as my van is facing the right way (which i've got down to a fine art) i can just pull the hose where it needs to go straight from the reel

That`s the thing Steve,it`s not always possible to get the van in the right position,so the next alternative is to get the hose to go the right way and the swivel is probably the best idea,

The reason being, I have a Trailer mount, and the other day I had four houses in different directions, after returning to correct the position of the reel several times, I decided there must be an easier way, and a swivel reel mounted on top of my Tank is the ideal way to achive it.

you dont need to go to all that trouble just fit one of these infront of your reel fix it solid you can pull hose through it in any direction from 80 meters.  i've one in my van been there two years took 5 mins fit. i would show you mine  but i've got flu and am not going out.

Everyones work is different and i have a lot of work that is awkward to park properly so the van faces the work,
