I started just doing the odd job here and there through word of mouth then i decided to get a bit more professional.  Opened a business Bank account and with that i get a free add with yell.com on their website and a line entry in the yellow pages and no other advertising, bought a new van and had it sign wrote.  I spent £100 on cleaning gear and £189 on a vacuum cleaner and i also got Public liability insurance and 100 business cards for £10.  Every week i get at least 2 enquiries which i often have to turn down because of family commitments and as i work on my own i do 10 houses a week.  This is never going to make me a millionaire but it allows me some luxuries and fits around my family.  I do find that some people would rather pay £5 an hour to an immigrant or stay at home mum looking for a bit of pin money but thease i leave to them and theres plenty to go round.  Good luck!!
