what happend today!advice please
« on: September 02, 2006, 10:48:33 am »
did a small front room 12 x 15 max started to clean hwe did not over wet
made sure dry when done,at the edges of the carpet started to pull up ???no underlay on this carpet it seemed cheap stuff :-\ the cust said not happy with this,I say this is not my responsiblity this has pulled away from your crippers, carpet was clean dry, seemed like carpet was shrinking
slightly :-\ after making things very clear to him its not my fault,he then says I will have to get a carpet fitter to put this back :-\ I said being the gentleman,ok I understand we will split your bill,he said ok thats fine,
shook hands,my gut feeling it might have shrunk slighty :-\
the carpet was a tight cord no underlay I think it was cheap crap my opinion, any thoughts has this happen to you,did I handle this correctly :-\
I said again to him I am not taking any response for this

Terry how come there were grippers down but no underlay? When a carpet is fitted like this it is at the wrong angle to grip the pins in the gripper and can pull off! What sort of backing did the carpet have? Chances are as it dries then it will go back.

personally Terry, I would suggest you didnt really handle it corectly :-\

I would say it is irrelevant that the carpet was "cheap crap" you were responsable when surveying to
make it clear of any problems that could surface.
If indeed you pointed these out and custy signed a waiver, it bodes well in your favour.
" Still not really sure if signed papers would really stand up in court though, if ever the worst came to the worst!!" in some cases.

why did you just not agree to get a friendly fitter to come and restrech? and you cover all the costs, the benifits of this must be in your favour, and less likely of him slagging you off ???
I recently hwe a b/w and was rather expecting a shrinkage prob as already parts of carpet were off grippers. Warned custy , and suggested bonnet clean, to no avail, she wanted hwe.

sure enough even been extra carfull shrinkage occured immediatly, No problem, she said, but as my freindly c/ fitter lived around the corner, I had it restreched a few days later. much to her delight
and hopefully future work from her ;D

You mentioned a cheap cord.  Would it happen to be one of those natural jute type cords?  Is so then you should have knowen is was going to shrink.

Regardless you cleaned it and it shrank so its your responsibility to put it right not the customers.

firstly I did not say to custy cheap crap,I was very amicable, the carpet was in certain areas off the gripper, hopefully the carpet fitter will put it back, the custy agreed with me on carpet not being over wet and was virtully dry :-\ we have done loads of carpets first prob ever ???at the end of the day I split the bill with him to a
cover the cost of the carpet fitter to which he was happy,in my opinion I beleave to have done the gentleman thing

Sounds like you got off lightly. Be glad of that as some customers are not so understanding.

Have you done any carpet cleaning recognised courses? If not, stick to windows.

" Still not really sure if signed papers would really stand up in court though, if ever the worst came to the worst!!" in some cases.

Even if the customer signs a waiver I believe the operator has a duty to excercise "due care" when cleaning the carpet.

If the customer can prove the operator did not take reasonable care (ie test the carpet before hand and clean accordingly) the operator could still be held responsible.

I`m afraid so,
I would have left it to settle, then got the fitter in.
No charge to your customer. No Way.
You have to be prepared to take it on the chin sometimes.
Not that`s a regular occurrence mind you.  ;)

Hi Terry

Everyone has problems occassionally. Although Dave could have been more diplomatic, it is true that there is a lot more to consider cleaning carpets than there is cleaning windows. For £95 it's worth doing the Prochem course (they're only down the road from you) and I think you'd be surprised how much different it is. The next time it could be a much more expensive carpet and the customer not so understanding.

Regards

Mike

Dave.

That's not very nice, why dose everyone think just because he has made a slight mistake he needs full training.

If I was him I wouldn't come on here if I had a problem judging by some comments on here.

Terry,
I didnt mean to upset you, but if you ask for advice, you must be prepared to take what comes up, and to me anyway, you came over as someone untrained in the business. I have been in this business over 27 years and still attend courses. I refuse to clean leather suites, simply because I havent, as yet done a recognised course and feel that it would be unprofessional to offer the service, without first having some professional instruction. Anyone, even a fully trained person can make a mistake, myself included usually caused by complacency or wharever, but never by ignorance.

of stick to window cleaning.I am not a new be at carpet cleaning, still got to learn, yes hand on heart I have never made a big mistake on carpets
ever so this has come as a big shock :o my intention is never to make
war but only friends all round carpet people or wc, but please because who I am,make no mistake if you think you can verble or otherwise put one on me,or try to put me down my advise please think before you write
thats the end of the matter,I turned to the forum for guidence and info not a slagging off to get back from where I come from,if there is a problem with that, you can always deal with me directly, otherwise I feel this forum has just lost its vocation I will simply log out and goodbye forever I do hope this is not the case

Hi Terry
If I was you I would stick to commercial window cleaning , for the
simple reason you will earn a lot more money cleaning windows
than you will earn cleaning carpets.

You've clearly, s'cuse the pun, made a success of your business to date, Terry and I read in another post something about your exploits in , I think, the States.

Humility, is a strength of character and displayed by people who are confident in themselves, but have the guts to admit, they don't know everything and sometimes make mistakes.

So what did you other guys do, when you made mistakes and don't pretend you never made any.
