Common sense would have told you to place it on something before moving it, or put it into a bag or anything to stop the drips. These fresheners do have strong dyes in them, she has probably cleaned up herself and spread it about all over the place.
I do think it was your responsibility to get a professional carpet cleaner in and get it cleaned up properly. It might have cost you 70 quid, but it would have been worth it in the long run and you would have kept a good relationship with the customer.
Ask on carpet cleaning, I am sure it will be too late if she has used something like vanish on it, the carpet will go orange anyway with that stuff.
