Customers keys.
« on: April 19, 2015, 07:38:49 am »
New customer who wants them done monthly both sides of glass. Gave me keys to let myself in as she would be at work. When I went to return them in the evening she said to keep them.

I'm not altogether happy with this. I mean what happens if her house gets burgled? Any of you have similar?

Got lots of keys.

Cleaner Planner assigns a customer number, so just make sure you don't tag em with the address ;)

I say I'm only insured if there's somebody home.

I guess it means she trusts you. That's a good thing. I really don't mean to sound negative but some people find a problem for everything.

ADDED: I've re-read my post, I'm not being negative, I'm being positive.

I won't accept house keys.  I'm OK with keys to a gate but definitely not for the house.  I even insist that a customer must remain at home while I'm cleaning insides (a job that I avoid as much as possible anyway).

Good that she trusts me, but this was the very first time I've cleaned for her so she doesn't know me from adam. Oh well I'll keep her keys and hope she dont get a break in, cos the first port of call for the police will be the window cleaner  :'(

Not really ...... if somebody breaks into the house that would mean they didn't have a key ......if you have a key why would you break in?

There was a post on here months back where the window cleaner had access to the house and was accused of taking an iPod
It was reported and I think the police got involved.
Trust is one thing until they lose something. Then the trust is gone and possibly your reputation is damaged.
Negative, maybe. For me if their not in while I'm there, there not done.

I think the point is that having a key is a huge responsibilty with a great deal of trust. And if something did happen you would of course be somebody the police would want to talk to. I'm going to keep her keys although I'm not entirely comfortable.
Thanks for the input guys.

Very good point................... Go give her the keys back and be honest, and tell her why.

Just tell her look I know you want me to come round for a bit of funny business, so we will arrange it now saves messing about with keys.

My uncle has a dog walking business and key holding is a normal part of his day to day job.
The keys are numbered and kept safe in a lockable security box.
Last year he had a break in and thieves stole the box with keys(not much use to them unless they can read minds). He told all the effected customers and most were very simpathetic and knew it was n't his fault.
One customer insisted for  all his locks to be changed costing the insurance around £600.
So if you go ahead check your insurance will cover this.
