Bored of Jump starting on Customers Drive
« on: January 01, 2015, 10:41:35 pm »
Hi Everyone,

After setting up a second pump for my first employee ;D, the van battery which powers the 100psi pumps is dead within a month  Really bored of jump starting etc.  I need to run pumps off leisure battery and not the van battery and then have the leisure battery charged when we hit the road.  Is this possible.  Would be really grateful for any advice on best type of leisure battery and any connections needed.  Happy to help anyone on any others questions you may have.  Happy New Year

You need a decent leisure battery I think a 110 or 120 AH I think they are. You would have to run this through a relay with a fuse then onto your van battery with another fuse, that should do the trick. I'm sure if you go to Hlafords they will sort all that out and fit it. They may be abit more costly than a local garage auto electrician if you can't do yourself. Hope this helps and you shouldn't have problems as long as your doing a few miles to keep the van battery charging up the leisure battery. You can always run a battery charger out to van and charge up every few weeks which myself would find a pain.

I've never liked the idea of charging a leisure battery from the vans alternator - it puts a load on it that it wasn't designed for. I have a 85amp battery on my 650ltr system and I only need to charge every 2 or three days. I don't let it go that far because I charge the battery as I fill the tank every evening.

Get intelligent charger from caravan dealer along with 110 amp leisure battery plus artic extension lead keep charger in van charge over night or every other night don't rely on split charge relay, unless your doing a fair amount of miles per day.

You can get a 150 amp semi - traction battery, also a c- tec charger, leave on charge as much as possible as it will do no harm, even the best chargers only put ina few amps per hour, so to replace 150amp takes a long time. The c- tec is one of the best on the market but will cost between £70 to £250 depending on model, but will last years.

I have a smart relay fitted, I cannot believe someone not wanting to fit one its the best thing and work very well. Do it and find out how well they works. It puts no strain on the van as it only works when the van`s battery is fully charged. Daily charging of mains power is a killer as they charge to fast.I have a C teck smart charger but only use it 3/4 times a year.

Buy a Transit with Duel batteries. It charges the second battery without flattening the starter battery. So easy. These pumps don't use much juice. An alternator shoud charge any battery easy...unless it a small van

i was getting bored with taking my spare batery out very few days and recently bought a new 110 amp leisure batt and a real quality intelligent split charger, 14 volts going into both batts and not had any probs since, flow seems more consistent too.
