Just a quickie on insurance...... I had my re-newal price for my van insurance from norwich union a year ago and it was £1100 without contents cover. I shopped around on the internet and got a quote for £700. I phoned norwich union and queried the renewal price and the sales person she recommended that by adding my fiancee (who would never even dare drive a van) it reduced to £600.  And I was added to her car insurance for free!

Well worth adding your spouse to your policy even if they don't drive it!!!

I added my wife on my insurance and it went down £80,shes only got 2 years no claims after having an accident which was declared her fault, ive got 8 years no claims, work that one out

Hi Andy,

My fiancee has only been driving for 2 years but perhaps because she was with N.U it made a difference! I've found them the cheapest insurance company by far even if they are a nightmare to deal with if you have a claim! Spent 2 hours explaining a prang I had on a roundabout a couple of years ago to someone in Bangladesh!!!

i think we all tend to speed as its the way of life these days after picking up 6 points a few years back i invested in a road angel which warns me of all cameras including mobile ones. a good investment and has saved my bacon on more than one occassion. someone metioned insurance i find the cheapest insurance is A plan hudreds cheaper than most .

I think the point i am making is that the motorist is easy pickings for the police as 121 million in one year indicates.

I have seen speed vans tucked in behind a burger van on one occasion. You don't see them outside a school or somewhere else do you?

People don't complain enough.

Near me in Stourbridge they have installed a new camera and repainted all the calibration lines on the road---- only its a new type of camera that detects you approaching it and not going away.
Also I have 6 points and thats £75 per 3 points extra for insurance and I insure 3 vehicles.

Used to be with Commercial Vehicles Direct but have changed to AQUOTE based in Andover, they are a brooker for all insurance companies. Both are very cheap

I have a 55 plate Fiat Doblo Cargo 19JTD SX and they only charge £400 a year. I got a quote from NU and it was £780.

Thet are very expensive and you still have to put up with them calling you Mr Ranger rather than Mr Grainger.

Just for the record there is a spray you can buy called safe plate, it makes the flash off speed cameras bounce back at themselves so you dont get caught,I have this on my motorcycle,not much point putting it on a sign written van though !! bit imcriminating dont you think,I have a road angel in my van so i know where they all are even the mobile types and the ones beneath the road surface

road angels are around £400 and the new one also have sat nav. well worth the money as they will detect all cameras including hand held though by the time you are told of the hand held its too late as it reads it as it bounces off. but all the others you have a lot of warning

Just a little help, it certainly helped me TWICE anyway!

Basically when you get the forms through the post with a fine - ignore them. What I mean by this is, fill in the form all correctly, take a photocopy then destroy the original. IF they take it to court you can stand up and explain that you sent the forms off, and that you have photocopies to prove it (they cannot disprove that you didnt send them). They will have no choice but to fine you just the original amount. Someone I know did exactly this.

Anyway, I have done this twice myself, and on both occasions I filled them out, photocopied them/destroyed the originals and ignored them etc. I have never heard a thing - and that was 3 years ago!

They have just sent me a reminder giving me 7 days, but i am not replying. If they then take me to magistrates court, i will cross this bridge when it comes. Thank's everybody for some good advice.

Hi All

This speed thing with vans having to do 10mph slower than cars, wheres the info come from ? I all so am the driver of a 44ton Fridge (artic) cat c+e, class 1. If your vehicle has a GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight)(Vehicle and pay-load) of 3.5 ton or more you are classed as an HGV and thus require the licence to drive one. Thats why you get the Merc Sprinters etc. with an ULW (unlaiden weight) of around 1.8/2 ton with payload it is under 3.5 ton so can be driven on car (cat b) licence. If you are a HGV (cat c/c+e) it is 40 mph on single roads- 50mph on duel carrage way- 60mph on motorway. Unless road signs show different.

Why dont you use sat-nav to tell you where the cameras are, like I do, and avoid the situation...Theres no point arguing with the coppers, as they'll always win.

Somebody who apparantly has it from an aquatance in the traffic police that the police are looking for a figure of 60% of all people who are sent a notice to just pay up without question and not go to court.

Apparantly they do not like the hassle of having to send one of their staff to court  to detest speeding notices because on many occasions they have been thrown out due to discrepancies in road signs and gun accuracy etc.
