many thanks for the reliable service in the past. We have not yet made up our minds to change -
but feel that a healthy competition is a good thing for all.

FFS its a window cleaning bill !!! hardly a huge purchase that deserves the time thinking about ........... my guess is that there retired and prob retired business people who come out with such dross lines ... healthy competition !

Wrong actually.  They are a late 30s/ 40ish year old couple with a two children.  He works from home and she works somewhere or another.  Neither are self-employed as far as I know. If I had written what I wanted to write it would have been something like "FFS.  Get over yourselves, will you?"  But I'm not made that way.

Price is pretty much the same for both companies - so is not an issue.
both are legitimate companies with good insurance - so it will come down to a quality comparison.

MY RESPONSE:

Dear <His name>
I just thought I would mention that water being left on the windows is the way that pure water pole systems work.  The water is purified as you know and it's the way I've cleaned your windows from day one. I recall sending you a fairly lengthy email explaining this. The front door I clean manually as I don't want to soak your entranceway.  I do feel that either yourself or <His wife> could have discussed this with me without the need to look elsewhere.   If I were to clean again for you, it would feel a bit stressful as I would be concerned about making even slight errors.  For me, one of the better things about window cleaning is the low level of stress.  Therefore, I have no wish to compete with your new service and have decided to withdraw from the contest.
Regards,

<My name>

I quite liked your reply until the bolded part where you make yourself sound a bit like a crybaby!

That's a pity.  I wasn't trying to present things that way.  It was actually intended as a mild pee take without it being obvious.  Not to worry.  I clean windows rather than write letters.
My English tutor at evening class reckons that I'm good enough to be a published author if I fine tune things by joining a creative writing class.  Once I've got through the next exam in June, that's what I wwill be going for.  I reckon Gold should too.  The man's clearly got talent.

Just forget it and move on. If you feel your quality of work is up to your high standards and they want to try someone cheaper, let them and don't waste your time taking them back on, move on. Life's too short to mess around with messers :)

This is probably the most honest customers will be!

Hi, unfortunately we\'d like to cancel having our windows cleaned at the above
address. We\'ve been really happy with the service but a friend of the family has
started his own business and we feel obliged to support him. If we require your
services again we\'ll be straight back in touch, thanks...!

Very rare tho!

:) .  The way I write on here is nothing like the way I write short stories.

Seriously though, this woman has been teaching for many years, doesn't throw compliments out without a lot of thought and has top degrees in her field.  She said something like
"Join a creative writing class (she may have said "group") and you will be a published author within a few years.  You have a rare talent and I'm envious."
Now, I've always known that I can write to a fair standard.  I  even have autobiographical work stashed away that has never seen the light of day.  I've had a fairly unusual, some would say debased, sort of life that has helped me to see the world from an unusual perspective; the fringes if you will.  Writing has always been the thing that I might get around to one day if I'm too decrepit to clean windows.  Once I have sat the exam in June, I will be approaching writing with both trepidation and excitement.  I feel that my best years are still ahead of me - even at the age of fifty seven.

I enjoyed wrioting that bit.
Honestly, the thought of being scrutinised and compared reminded me of the bad old days of being an employee.  Twenty three years of self-employment may have made me unemployable  :) .

1st thing here to note..., you have to remember that your customers do not have any obligation to keep your service and they can cancel or change to whom ever they so wish. Why get annoyed or even think that any sort or reply to them exposing thier exuses does any favors?

If i get a cancelation, i simply thank them for thier custom and confirm the cancelation. Thats it. if they return, then great.. if not..so what.

Of course you're right.  However, the bit I found a bit galling was that he wanted to keep me on a string while comparing the quality of someone else's clean - after I had been supplying the service for maybe 7 years.  If he wants to cancel then fine.  If he doesn't, that's fine too.  However, if I lose a customer, I want to replace them as soon as possible - not be kept in limbo while the customer has a power play and I lose money by not replacing them.
Also, I'm not blind to the fact that a large part of my early life was about being compared unfavorably to others and persistently being fed the message that I wasn't good enough.  I didn't have much say in it as a child.  Today, I do have a say in whether or not I'm prepared to expose myself to such a situation.  I chose not to play his game - eventually :) .

That was part of the problem though.  They hadn't made their mind up.  It was like they wanted to dangle me on a piece of string as their first reserve in case the other window cleaner didn't produce the quality.  That's not why I'm self-employed.  The only reason I didn't take them straight off my list on the first email was because I've lost a lot of commercial work during the past year and am still topping up the residential part of my business to make up the shortfall.  They bwanted to play games.  I didn't want to play.  I wonder how it might have been if they contacted me to ask when I was going to clean their windows next and I were to reply
"Well I've just taken on another customer and I'm waiting to see if they're a better customer than you before deciding whether to continue your service." :)

This stuff slices both ways.  I'm starting to wish I had been a bit more brutal when the economy was doing well.
