« on: April 05, 2014, 06:07:23 am »
when you are chock full on your diary  ,what do you do if somebody wants squeezing in with a big 1 off.  this is big enough id have to put on hold the round

5 times what youd normally charge ?

theres a bit more to this.    the jobs for a builder who iv worked for fairly regular last 3 yrs.  theyv stepped up to building 4 storey houses that start at 750k a pop.
now this builder pulled a stroke on me end of last year got me to do their brand new HQ building ,then asked for a price for the 6 weekly but then told me some  Wfp guy is doing the maintenance clean -so basically got me in for the hard graft clean only.  it was at that point i twigged id never done a follow up clean at any of their properties ,seems this other guy has been riding on my coat tails.
iv decided im gonna wait until the last week then tell em the price i want for these new  1 off homes.    howsabout £300 for the outside only each house ?

will they take it? time will tell

£300 isn't enough. I wouldn't go near a builders clean for twice that.

Perhaps they follow health and safety regs and won't let you do the maintenance cleans ...  ;)

I'd better explain. Using a ladder when you don't need to is against safety regs right?

So for a builders clean you "need" a ladder as you get up close and personal and get all the crap off yeah? (But you get away with "short duration")

For the maintenance cleans Mr BighousebuilderwithniceHQ doesn't want some health and safety busting oik up his ladder with flat cap and fag making his building co. look like a bunch of cheapskate cowboys.

So charge the earth if you want to do a builders clean with no hope of maintenance cleaning. But ... will he agree then not pay?

Re-arrange these words - I builders a clean with barge pole touch a wouldn't.

Too much risk of not getting paid due to:

"scratching glass"
"builder goes under"
"you marked the cill"

And the basic rule of never do business with a Range Rover driver unless you have cash up front in your hand.  ;D
It's a game of three halves!

I've got a customer that sent the other way.
Massive house, minging windows, not been done for nearly 3 years.
Just assumed it'd be a one off.
Have her the price-£150.
She doesn't bat an eyelid.
'Shall I crack on?' Says I.
'Yup, I'll stick the kettle on' says she.
Moments pass, she brings my brew out (with biccies) and says:
'so how often do people normally get their windows cleaned?'
'Monthly, for the most part' I says
'Can you put me down for that then please?'
'Yes but I'll need to set up your direct debit payments before you get added to our round'
'No problem' she says 'send me the details and I'll sort it'

Couple of days later-all set up, she's paying £150PCM (and happy to!) and I've got a job where I keep going back to the van for no reason, sitting down to drink my tea & play with my phone  just to string it out to 2 hours!
Lovely job.
(Just thought I'd share)

RobertPhil-I think Granville is spot on.
Work out what you think is a fair price, bung a few quid on top so a good job becomes a plum job.
If you're still a bit unsure, have issues with the job etc. speak to the site manager. Not aggy, just politely ask him if you can get the maintenance cleans. (Don't say 'how come I don't get the maintenance cleans?!) Simply ask to be considered for them.

When under cutting my local windies a old lady came out and showed me round her 6 bedroom house, and asked my price.
I felt really cheeky that day so over priced it massively at £7.50 every 4 weeks! And for the job :o

Last job was £400 worth about £150 tops.

They thought about it for like 2 weeks called back and asked if we could match £375 :o

I did match it, they went out for the day and i was done in a little over 3 hours.

Next door wants their roof doing, told em i can adjust the price and did theirs for £250 and then charged the £375 customer £350 as i finished a "bit earlier".

Never ever felt like such a rouge trader in all my life. But the jobs were spotless and i got two GLOWING testimonials.

Proves what some people will pay lol

this is such an honest trade which is partly why i like it.    nontheless doing 4 storey ladderwork must command a real premium.   and itll allow me to bung my workers a bonus . i expect itll take 1 hour to do each house

i even thought of hiring in a skylift in my quote but the houses are too close to each other to get one in  , unless you airlifted the skylift over the houses using a chinook ?- now my 300 will look very low compared to a chinook hire quote
