keys to commercial premises
« on: March 14, 2006, 06:47:47 pm »
Just have a quick question.

When you have staff, do you have keys returned to you every day to keep in the safe, or do you allow cleaners to take keys home as they will need them the following day?
It seems a hassle to get cleaners to pick up in the morning and drop off at the end of their day, especially as its a 1hr clean per day.

To be honest lisa it would be very difficult and time consuming to go round picking up all the keys, but non the less a very good question!, i suppose your thinking insurance wise, we do not take the keys from our cleaners, and i have never known in 20 years anyone that goes round collecting all the keys  ;) but there is always a first!. ;D ;D ;D

I know of a local company who insist on all keys being returned to base at the end of the day.

All depends on insurance, as you say, I suppose.

We keep all keys in a locked safe, but are always present at the moment, which kinda makes it easy.

Also depends on any clauses you may have around the clients overall responsibility for the security of their building.

I remember a similar thread to this 5-6 months ago.

I wont be letting new staff free with the keys until police checks are completed, but i'm a cautious person and the keys should be locked away ideally. I know the client will ask abou the security, they were insistant on us locking away their alarm codes, god knows what they would be like with keys. They trusted us straight away.
Maybe i'm being too paraniod

hi lisa
we have this dillema goin on too. i think at the end of the day you have to do whatever the customer is happy with and right it onto their contract with you.we have also thought about havin a deposit from staff which will be returned when they give the keys back to us at the end of their contract. obviously though this will not deter someone from using them illegally if they really want to. we will be doing full crb checks but of course they can take a while to come through. let me know how you get on  ;D

Yes some insurance companys cover keys, I have present cover with Suttons Specialist Risks Limited, who are one of a few specialists to the cleaning industry, they also cover misuse of telephones, failure to perform, treatment risks, etc etc, they also cover the item/s being worked upon: unlike others.

But all keys/electronic passes have to be kept in a safe place, also not be identified to the customers premises.
