I think we have to be realistic on this subject.  There are so many window cleaners now that 'treading on toes' is bound to happen.

I have my own ethical code when canvassing/quoting/following up enquiries:

I never ask whether someone already has a window cleaner - that's their business, if they want to tell me so they will.

If I do know they already have a window cleaner I never ask how much they're being charged.

If I'm canvassing, I knock and ask if the householder would like a quotation (having already delivered leaflets so they know who I am).  If they say no, I thank them and move on.  If they say yes then I give them my quotation, based on my current pricing structure.

They may or may not already have a window cleaner, I may or may not be cheaper - none of that matters.  I have behaved ethically and given them my quotation together with a description of my service and its benefits.  It is now up to the person to decide whether or not to accept that quotation.

This is based entirely on my pricing and my level of service.  There has been no mention of whether or not they already have a cleaner and what he charges.

I would never decline an invitation to quote - I'm in business.  If I win the job and it later transpires that I'm cheaper than the existing cleaner, that's business but I haven't tried in any way to deliberately undercut.  If I'm more expensive then that just tells me the other man is not doing a good job.

Provided you always act ethically, no-one has any reason to complain and if they do I simply point out my operational methods as above.

Spot on Ian.

Had some muppet pull up and stop me today while I was delivering flyers saying you cant flyer round here this is my patch.

I told him there is no such thing as your patch and I can flyer anywhere I want.

He said if I loose any customers there will be trouble, so I gave him a flyer.

He said what  do I want a flyer for?  I said so you know how to get in touch with me :-)
I would have lamped him.

No you wouldn't

You mean that would have been the first thought that came into your head. You possibly also mean that would have seemed the easiest and most appropriate response due to your lack of social skills and english language. Maybe what you are really trying to say is that you are unaware of the need to be rational in your responses to other people, that you have no social skills and sometimes this requires counting to 10, thats the first number after 9 by the way, so we don't respond with inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour that is likely to cause us more trouble than it is actually worth.

But you surely aren't that stupid are you.

You are! Oh, okay. Crack on.

If he were doing a good job, why would the customer change to me when I'm more expensive?

(Perhaps that line in red should have been "If they accept my quote and I'm more expensive.............")

9/10 if hes cheaper and the customer is looking for someone else and accepts a quote that's more expensive then something is wrong somewhere with his cleaning or relationship. its up to the customer who they want cleaning there windows... the same if you get a 2/3 quotes for a plumber its up to you who u choose.

We had an irrate answer phone message from a window cleaner today unhappy because his customers had received a leaflet off us.  he said it was out of order.  he told us that we should do what he did and only flyer houses with dirty windows!  :P

Richard,

To be honest if ever we had posted leaflets, it has only been through houses with dirty windows.

We are in north west area, and can create all kinds of trouble depending on who's work gets them posted at

am in the North West area and would post leaflets into every house, dont care what anyone says its completely down to the customer who they would like to use its as simple at as stright foward as that.

If you get a plumper a spark a gardener a roofer you choose who you want to use. why would it be any different for window cleaning? what your actually saying to the customer is you either have me clean your windows.. or no one else  ???.. as if get a grip
Dave.
