Richard,

To be honest if ever we had posted leaflets, it has only been through houses with dirty windows.

We are in north west area, and can create all kinds of trouble depending on who's work gets them posted at

I was asked to price up one of your jobs once. I declined only cos I knew you had it. Not due to being worried but simply as I know you already had it. If I didn't know who it was though who cleaned it then I'd price it up, simple as that

there's going to be all sorts of trouble then because there's loads of em going out each month now through every house on the street.  i employ people to leaflet drop so they have to go through every door  :o

if you give us a list of your customers i'll ask the leafleters to miss your clients of if you like  ;)

i found when i canvas that the houses with dirty windows never want window cleaners anyhow.  if they wanted their windows done they ll do them themselves until a window cleaner turns up.

its up to the customer if they want to try out a new service.

i have houses that we clean leafleted all the time.  don't loose business to them though.  even though we're about the most expensive in the area.

we quote over the phone or online, and we dont undercut either.

likewise i know ive lost work to bob and ian in my area at times...  it's just the nature of customers

When I canvass I knock every door. If I am told they already have someone, I simply thank them for their time and go next door. I am looking, not to take another guy's work, but to find customers who don't already have a windy but would like to use my service.

There's too much of this territorialism going on. We all have to earn a living, and just because someone has work in an area doesn't give them the right to stop anyone else.

Dave01203,

not sure if your reply was aimed at me, saying get a grip

but I was merely explaining that I would only post leaflets through the doors of houses with dirty windows, as I would BELIEVE that the clean windows would already have a customer and would not want to step on anyones toes, just the way I operate, and have operated for the past 25 years.

There is just an unwritten code of practice that USED TO happen between window cleaners, which is what I have just explained, but nowadays that doesn't seem to be the case unfortunately.

I also believe that it is entirely up to the customer who they choose to use as their window cleaner.

If im asked that's different, or if like someone has posted which is what I would do, I would always say if you have a window cleaner stay with him if your happy, if they are not then I will definatly give them a price in the hope of picking up the extra work.

However, with there being so many arseholes that pretend or think they are window cleaners, either weighing up houses, or just not giving a toss, it is these people that give genuine window cleaners a bad name.

I have worked hard over the years building my business and have worked stupid hours in the process, so I will look out for my business and also my customers,

Its a strange one this.
A mate of mine has in the past been undercut and lost work he's then found out who did it and they've given him the house back.
Its not something I would do if they want someone else then I'm happy to let them go.
If I canvass I'll do every house in the road but if I knew they definitely had a windie I'd give them a miss but I've no way of knowing.
I've found the ones with dirty windows in my area dont want them done as a rule.

it might have been better for the window cleaners, but not better for the customers.  i would guess that the territorial window cleaners (and I dont think you are one of these by the way) would tend to be the traditional type (and by this i mean in terms of service style not cleaning style) who's service is in my experience often inferior to the newer breed of WCs.  customers get better service now and they can choose which window cleaner's service style suits them best.

Ste m,

I think people on here are missing my point.

If I lose work to someone undercutting me, then that is ok in my current position as I have quite a bit of work so wouldn't create too many problems in money sense.

It is the principal of not respecting each other, and for that reason alone I will protect what I have worked hard for, although I am only as good as my last job, so if I do a bad job, then it's obvious the customer will want a different window cleaner,,,,,,, I wouldn't blame them wanting a new window cleaner and cancelling me, not a problem

There is no point in me commenting anymore because it gets either twisted, or newer window cleaners don't share similar views.

I HAVE seen one of my customers, lady in her 80s black and blue from someone saying they where a window cleaner, not nice at all, completely sick.

Richard,

I totally disagree with what you have said relating to traditional window cleaners being inferior to newer breed of window cleaners.

Window cleaning is not something that has just happened, it been going for years.

Speaking as a very good traditional window cleaner, and also a water fed pole window cleaner, I cannot separate the 2, apart from the safety aspect, which is well worth investing in and to promote our business as a very good job, rather than some people's views, like looking down on the window cleaner, and a lot of the time thinking we are to blame for everything.

Everybody's work isn't safe really, there's no stopping anyone going to our customers and offering there service's., its whether you've built up a good relationship with your client's as to whether you keep there custom.  There is  for some of us on here respect for your fellow window cleaner's.
And sometimes from  my experience even people you no take advantage of your kind nature by approaching customers you told them about, but hey thats business for you. Just my opinion. ;D
