Hi just wondering what is the largest amount of work people have refused to quote for.

I have just refused to even look at work I have been asked to quote for and have all just ripped all the paperwork up, for 8200 properties all in Manchester.

Not even prepared to let my blood pressure go there, but I doubt many people have refused that volume, even though the money would be seriously big, and more than I will turn over completely

Small but perfectley formed

Most for me was 800 odd shell garages nationwide. No point doing small jobs with so much travel in between. Even subcontracting it would have been difficult.

I turned down a €17k contract last year - and turned down quoting for a huge airport a few years ago.

Some jobs just aren't worth the hassle, no matter how well they pay!

Correct nathaneal,

Would rather pick the better easier work, and sleep at night.

Been there, and done it before  ;)

8201 propeties, for me  ;D.

That's a brave decision, Archer. The money must have been tempting but it's not everything.
Your health and quality of life is more important and I doubt you'll regret it.
Good luck.

Chris

I walked off a job worth about £50 000. If the job is commercial I will happily look at it!

Maybe worth having a chat about!?!?

I was once asked to quote a mid terrace. Had to turn it down, don't do terraces.  :o

This must be the same work Ron posted about. I could count on one hand the amount of companies/HA's responsible for 8000+ properties in Manchester alone.

Chanster00

I am not desperate for the work and I wouldn't want the stress quoting, health & safety paperwork, getting it completed, it would personally make me ill.

My uncle taught me window cleaning when I was a kid, he worked hard all his life doing big window cleaning, having over 20 lads working for him, decided to calm it down 2 weeks ago, and on Monday had major heart attack and has been in a coma since Monday.

So I'm just taking it as easy as possible, I'm comfortable, got piece of mind and family, so my health comes first, money's not everything.

We used to clean 2 major hospital complexes here in Germany. The one in a large town called Minden and the other in a town called Detmold. Very well paid as it's all priced by square meters of glass including frames etc.

It's OK if yo have enough trustworthy guys who know what they're doing. The problems start when you have to work to hospital timings, such as the operating theatres and ITU's. It means moving guys and gear from one end of a complex to another for a rushed few minutes to get a certain area finished. Stops any rythm of working and can mess up other work that's only half finished.

We don't have the "method statement" and "risk assessment" cr@p that UK seems to have to wade through, but it's still a headache getting any big complex job finished on time. Also, it can be really mind numbing working hundreds of windows, all the same, one after another for hours at a time. All of this sort of work here is always inside and outsides. So your staff have to be good or a matron or head cleaner will call you back to re do any  job they aren't happy with.

On top of that, you have to order and organise any cherry pickers and scissor lifts needed and sometimes pay for these in advance.
So if you're young, ambitious and keen to be moving forward in a short time, it's right up your street. If you've been there and done it, and you've paid off your mortgage and like enjoying life, then avoid stuff like that. I understand ARCHER completely, apart from why he supports Man Utd. We can't all be perfect  ;)
No still don't understand, I must be thick

Never refused to quote.

Quoted so high I knew I'd never get it or if I did it'd be worth it but never not.

What is it archer? Housing association? Surely it's a once a year thing as no one could do them every month :)

We decided to run away from a tender for Bury council last year as they had something like 300 buildings that had gone straight to tender and needed individually pricing over a stupid time span of something like 2 weeks. The was another for Leicester council this year and it again was something like 180 buildings straight to tender.
