Insuring a van with crash tested system
« on: February 28, 2013, 05:39:37 pm »
Today I received my renewal for insuring my Fiat Scudo which has a Pure Freedom crash tested system installed. I have over 10 years NCD. The quote was £700. My brother in law has the same van but is a decorator - his insurance is under £300 with a different company. So I decided to shop around. I called 2 of the large insurers and both told me that they don't offer cover because of the modification of the water tank installation.
The company who I am insured with currently told me that because of the installation of the crash tested system the premiums are much higher.

So if you are driving around with your water tank being held to the bulkhead by a strap (or less insome cases) you will be rewarded with lower premiums.

Seems to me that the insurance companies are not interested in those who do the responsible thing as long as they can falsely hike up their premiums

It's cheaper because you won't be alive to claim personnal injury.

Simon.

Has a crash test been done on the fitting of a system into a scudo ? I only seen a test on a ford transit and the test was to confirm the frames rigidity on impact. I would imagine the way a system will be fitted will vary slightly from van to van. Although the frame still should retain rigidity whether it stays on the van floor will vary i would imagine.

It's possible that crash-tested systems are penalised because in every test I've seen they utterly wreck the van; the Gardiners one bent the van in the middle.  Possibly more likely to be written off in a low speed accident.

Now, I'll be clear, I'll pay that for the safety, just a possible reason.

Interesting...

I got told by one insurance co that they could insure a tank if it was tested to an internationally recognised standard.  She said crash test in itself isnt enough as any company can crash a van with a tank and say there you go its crash tested.  They have to be able to prove the occupants would survive.  She kept banging on about this recognised standard thing.

Also, she said that my tank strapped in the van (like it is now) is NOT classed as cargo or whatever, its a modifiaction and if I had an accident it would not be insured.  wonderful I thought.  Thats when i started to think about getting a proper manufactured system.

Adrian Flux were best for us last time round.

More Than best for two others recently (no tanks in those tho' but I'll be trying them when the WC van's due).
