What do you think about this idea ?

Putting Joe my part timer into van on his own next year to free me up to grow customers and pressure wash.

Thinking of paying along lines of a 50/50 split after a "van charge" taken out for the day which is to cover fuel, insurance, water, equipment etc.

Van charge prob about £30 to £35 a day and balance split 50/50.

Also the possible extra insurance costs to, I'm guessing you already have the employees liability cover and public liability too!  

My insurance jumped from £125 a year to Just over £450 a year to get cover!
Oh and the van insurance might go up depending if he drives it already

3600 posts as me and balance since employing 

just sounding out people more experianced than me which is why im on here to learn.

thinking behind it is to avoid the reocurring problems others who employ have had on here ... poss to generous so what hourly rate do you pay to a guy running a van and not a guy who just assists ?

i pay 25% and a £50 cash bonus at the month. 50% would be utter madness. You would be lucky to make £150 profit a week at 50%

your van insurance will go up even if he drives already.  I;ve never added someone and not had a rise.

don't forget holidays either.  for every 8 days they work (roughly speaking), you have to pay them for a full day off.

sounds like you'll be paying him more than you get yourself.  especially when you consider the increased overheads to your business of your new van

it depends on what type of business you want to run.  if you are running it for lifestyle, not wanting a multi van operation, whatever...  then maybe pay them a great wage.  if that makes you feel good.  dont expect them to work better for you though, just because you pay them more.

well there calculated already hence the £30 / £35 per day van charge so on a 20 day month the first £600 / £700 no split as thats to cover running costs.

as long as im always 1 van behind you Richard I be happy UNLESS you only have the 1 van then that not so clever

I would sub contract to him if you don't want the hassle of employing or employ on as an output worker so they get paid a set amount for task or tasks completed. I've found that works best for me I've straight forward employed in the past and found that the workers take the view that they get paid the same if they work hard or not so aren't as productive as they should be.

I've only got one van mate!

My business isnt very big at all currently.  It is small but beautifully formed 

Just starting to grow it a little bit at a time now, slow steady growth is what i;m after

It will cost you about 16k in running costs for your van, wages, taxe, insurances, just to break even.  If you think there is profit for you after that, you need to consider if the profit is worth the extra grief.  But please don't go 50/50 with him.
