Pulled off driveway last night, got about 50 yards and the van rolled to a halt. The engine is still running, but very high pitched engine noise. No power, if I try to move the engine cuts out. Called aa out, apparantly the engine pulled out of its mounts and dropped over to one side, it would be the side with the cam belt. He recons the belt jumped a few notches and damaged the engine. He said it could probably be saved as it is running but will need to be rebuilt.

No idea how it pulled out. It was a w reg scudo.

Probably cost more then vans worth if you get a garage to do it,could do yourself if you know your way round the engine for maybe 200,probably bent a few valves

I don't have a clue how to do it myself. That's what the aa guy said, probably bent valves.

The thing with replacing that van is that you need to have the cash to do it. I have the 500 or so it will take to replace the valves (a guess) but don't have 3/4k for a replacement van.

Did you do it yourself though? I thought it was a big job like replaceing a head gasket?

Yep you would have to replace headgasket at sametime along with ,messing with cambelts etc,a garage will charge you more then 500 mate,I doubt they give a proper price untill they see the damage when the head is off

I have a mobile guy who is quite reasonable. He recently changed a snapped wishbone for £60.00 so I am hoping he won't be garage prices.

So guys any idea what I'm looking at using a mobile guy if I'm lucky and its just bent valves?

I used to be a full time mechanic,when I left school i think you be lucky for anything under 700 to be honest,but it could have bent a few valves ,possibly damaged top of pistons but unlikely.

mine did it last year, a dispatch, I got away with a new engine mount cost about £70 quid, valves were not damaged, the high pitched noise is more likely the cam belt rubbing, I fixed mine myself

the engine never gets back to normal  ( if its the head ) spend the money on a new van

137 for what to open up look at it ?, if hes damaged the head in anyway it is going to cost a great deal of money and as already said it will never run the same.

I hope for his sake £137 is the bill but would not be optimistic

I can get a running scrappy engine for 250. Would it be cheaper to get that fitted instead of stripping down engine?

david buy nothing until you try the following, get a bit of wood and gently jack the engine back into position, then start and you may find it runs just fine then, if it does you just need to get the engine mount bolted back up, on my van one of the bolts had sheared off and I had to replace the part that the mount bolts into

Good advice above,if not that get some prices,but if you have a w reg scudo you can pick them up around 1000

I hope this is the case but I'm not usually that lucky. Will try jacking it up tomorrow.
