Does honesty pay?
« on: February 05, 2012, 12:50:18 am »
Sorry, I should have put this in diff section but don't know how to move it now.

I'm up in Newcastle with the poorly wife who has an appointment with a prof somebody on monday. We thought we'd make a weekend of it and do some shopping sunday, stay over a couple of nights etc as its 200 miles from home. We go into maccydees tonight and after ordering ( I'm the only one at the counter) I notice an open wallet on the counter in front of me. I could see all the 20s and 10s, must have been £300-400 at a guess. I confess that for a split second I thought how much I could do with some cash like that, but no, the conscience kicked in and i thought how gutted the owner would feel when he realised he'd lost his wallet. I picked it up and checked a card (both debit and credit cards etc in) for a name, found one and started asking around for calum Donahue. A voice says 'over ere, this is im' so over I go. Anyways, I hand him his wallet and said you left it in the counter etc and what does he do?! He said absolutely nothing to me at all, just turned to his mate and said' I'm so 'f'in stupid' counts his money to see if it's all there and started talking to his mates with his back to me. I couldn't believe it, I was actually gobsmacked as he didn't say anything or look at me. So I went and got my order, sat down etc and spent the next few mins listening to his 'f'in etc while parents with kids looked on disapprovingly but wouldn't say anything as there were 4 of them ( age bout 20). They finished, got up and went. And I was left thinking 'what a Pratt' i should of kept it (again only for a split second...honest guvner). It was weird, wanting to do a good turn or whatever you'd call it, turned into a I wish I hadnt bothered, he deserved to have lost it. Does honesty pay, I'm not so sure anymore!

What goes around around comes around. He probably walked out of there. Said something wrong to someone. Got a punch on the nose for it. His missus told him she was leaving him for the postman. He also probably got the sack so the last bit of money he had was what he had in his wallet. So he was left with nothing.

Karma is a bitch! Well you could live in hope anyways

You did the right thing; feel good about it.  Never regret a good turn you've done for someone, that's a waste.

It was weird, wanting to do a good turn or whatever you'd call it, turned into a I wish I hadnt bothered, he deserved to have lost it.

I find things work out best when I focus on what I do or don't do, not on what others do or don't do.

You've done spot on, just leave it there and feel good, rather than focus on the other person and feel bad.

As my therapist would say. You can't control other people's actions. Some situations you win, some you lose. Better that you feel good about your actions, I wouldn't give the guy a second thought (apart from the mental image of decorating the high street with his blood) :)

Let's hope you never misplace anything.

Last year I went back to a little bungalow to collect 14 quid, two cleans, as could never catch little old lady at home. Over comes neighbour on opposite side of the road and says. Mrs x has passed away, I will pay for her window cleans, the family will give it back, she must owe you 3 or 4 cleans?

I say, please tell the family I am very sorry for their loss, pleas keep the money. Over she walks to her own house and starts talking to a lady on the pavement whilst I am sat in van, telling her our conversation.

Over comes the lady on the path and says she would like me to give her a quote for her windows and the neighbour either side of her house. She give me an address and I go straight there.

I end up with £80 New work every 6 weeks.

For every idiot, there are many who will be thankful. You were just unfortunate.
