We had one when we did all the window cleaning.
Started off moaning he couldn't do it as fast as the other, of course in the end he was as fast.
Always on time and worked hard earning good money until ............. about 12 months in the attitude started >:(
Wanted/needed more money but wouldn't do the extra work for it.
Needed time off at very short notice (like on the morning) because wife needed to go to doctors about her toe (hardly life threatening)
Demanded this demanded that.

Finally on the 3rd time of threatening to quit, I wrote the resignation letter for him one night and got him to sign it when he arrived for work the next morning ;D
I was under the impression you sold your window cleaning business.
With hindsight I should have just paid him off at that point because he spent the next 7 days without speaking a single word to me, and so it came to pass that he was canvassing our customers to change over to him....... which none did.

Not content with that he then decided to confront my wife one day by waiting for me to drive away before appearing at the front door, but not quick enough for me to turn around and we had a right set to in the street.

Put me right off them for life.
I  was under the impression you sold up your window cleaning business.

He did! If you look carefully he said "when" we did the window cleaning ;D ;D ;D

I think I will put my thoughts here as well..

As some of you have already noticed I am not English, thought I am permanent resident in the UK.
Have been here for some time. I am not polish my self, but I am from Eastern Europe
Had lots of experience working with poles in this country.
Are they better or worse then any English bloke to be employed ? It is a bit silly question to start with. But I will ask to answer that.
Many of polish or any other eastern Europeans have proved to work hard and be a valuable employs.
A short example: In Nov/Dec I have taken a night shift work at Tesco stores to go along with my window cleaning, was scared to get snow and be out of work.
around 80 staff (without managers) at tescos during the night and at least 35 poles. They have put one of the poles as a manager to help as some of them don't even speak English.
However they have proved to be a good workers.
Why they are good ? They had difficult time in they country and here they have a chance and they work for it.
soon time comes and they get settled, have some new opportunities, learn language, settle down here and they no different to any other.

I have seen brilliant English workers over my last 8-9 years. Hard working, fast, smart.

Now at tescos I worked with an English lad, he was crying that it's not enough income and his girlfriend is due to have a third kid and he desperate for some money.
I did give him my number and said to call me and I will give him some work during his holidays (two weeks), said you can do some canvassing and explained that if things going good with that he can make twice more money then at tescos  (he is that type of person to do that - talkative, not scared to speak to any stranger in the shop etc..) He was very excited.
Said if that wont work for you, you can come and help me and I will pay you.
So he was duo to call me on Sunday. Nothing
I try to get to him on Monday - no answer.
Haven't heard from him since.

At tescos, they have employed at least 15 staff in November, all different nationalities, only I and two other was left by the January.

I could give so many examples from my experience and there will be no answer to the question.

It's just getting the right people to do the right job.
Some will want to have opportunities to grow, learn and achieve and if they good, got to give them a chance for that so they don't start to think of undercutting you.
Some will only need to stay where they are, happy with secured job not looking around.

It is difficult to get a right person to do the job, but once you get it and you manage it well - can bring a huge value to your business.

You probably didn't get a call from him because he didn't fancy working for an immigrant?

i must be in the minority then !

i always have problems with english workers !

i never have problems with polish / east european !  ( same wages )

i have always found it is the english who , dont turn up , use every excuse going , are rude , think they can take my customers , etc .

maybe i have been very unlucky with the english , and lucky with the polish !

He knew I do window cleaning and he was the one who was initiating the talk, not me who asked him to work.
But well - whatever he fancy it's up to him - I don't care

Well said, Helen.
Maybe it's better to employ someone on their merits, and not where they come from.

i know if i went to poland they wouldnt be rushing to give me there benefits and jobs over a local lad.
wrap it up however you want but this is simply the truth. it says it all that this coutry is more appealing for foreigners to work in over there country. of course they will work harder it simply because they have a better life than they are used to. send me to australia to work in a dead end job and i bet id enjoy it more than any of the locals who think there life is crap. simple facts

Blame the last government who opened the doors to them, not the people who want to work for a better life for their families?
